Will 'The Hobbit' shoot for 370 days?

Apparently so. During a recent BD Live chat, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro talked to fans about the production of his upcoming "The Hobbit," which he says will start filming in 2010 and for "about 370 days or so."

Del Toro answered quite a few interesting questions, including what one of the big challenges will be in making this film.

"The challenge is to create and expand a massive universe and be as immersive as the Trilogy was. To approach Tolkien’s book with the right mixture of reverence, enthusiasm and invention," he wrote.

When asked about his approach to special effects, here's what he had to type: "You will see some mind-boggling mixture of CGI / Puppetry like never before. The demarcation of where one technique ends and the other begins will NOT be as clean as in "Hellboy II" or "Blade II" or "Pan's Labyrinth." I am going to push further than ever on both fronts."

Well, well, that sure sounds interesting enough. For more del Toro answers to cool questions, head over to bilbohobbit.com, which posted the entire chat transcript.

Del Toro developing 'Pinocchio' feature

Guillermo del Toro and the Jim Hensen Co. are currently developing a stop-motion version of "Pinocchio," according to bloody-disgusting.com.

Del Toro, who's writing the script with Gris Grimly, told the Web site the film will be much darker than the original tale.

"The idea came from Gris, and everybody loves his book about it. The original story is far more perverse and spooky and semi-necrophilia vibe to it in certain aspects," he told B-D.

Grimly will direct "Pinocchio" with Adam Parrish King. Del Toro most recently directed "Hellboy II: The Golden Army."

Besides "The Hobbit," del Toro is also prepping for remakes of "Frankenstein" and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." He's also on board for "Slaughterhouse-Five" and "Drood." Wow, that guy sure is busy, and that's bloody awesome.

Bayona, del Toro to develop ‘Hater’

Filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona is set to direct Universal’s adaptation of David Moody’s novel “Hater,” according to Variety.

Glen Mazzara (“The Shield”) penned the screenplay, which focuses on an epidemic of violence perpetrated by ordinary people.

Guillermo del Toro jumped on board to produce the project, which marks Bayona’s English-language debut. Mark Johnson is set to co-produce.

Bayona most recently directed the excellent Spanish thriller “The Orphanage,” which picked up numerous film awards worldwide.

Bayone told Variety he finds the idea of a movie focusing on people’s fears in today’s world interesting. Production on “Hater” is set to kick off next year.

Guillermo del Toro to co-write vampire trilogy

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is a machine. I honestly don’t know how he does it, but the man just keeps adding on new projects to an already busy schedule. I mean, he’s pretty much booked through flippin’ 2017!

According to Variety, the man behind “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Hellboy” is now breaking into the novel business, co-writing a vampire trilogy with Chuck Hogan.

The first book is entitled “The Strain” and is expected to hit the market next summer. The trade says the story will revolve around an invasion of New York City by a vampiric virus. The series will trace the roots of the vampiric race back to its Old Testament origins.

Sounds pretty interesting. Maybe del Toro will turn these into a film trilogy one day. For now though, he’s gearing up to direct “The Hobbit.” Also among his future projects are remakes of “Frankenstein” and “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and “Drood.”

As for Chuck Hogan, he’s also the author of “The Prince of Thieves,” which Ben Affleck is set to rewrite and direct for the big screen.

Ian McKellen to return as Gandalf

After plenty of speculation, Sir Ian McKellen has finally confirmed he will return in the role of Gandalf in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming “The Hobbit.”

According to Empire Online, McKellen is pretty excited about traveling back to Middle Earth. At a recent screening of “The Dark Knight,” the “X-Men” actor said he will be a part of “The Hobbit” although he hasn’t signed a contract yet.

McKellen also said he’s looking forward to working with del Toro and Andy Serkis, who is also returning in the role of Gollum. Peter Jackson is producing.

“The Hobbit” is based on a book by J.R.R. Tolkien and serves as a prelude to “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

McKellen most recently starred in “X-Men: The Last Stand.” His acting credits also include “The Da Vinci Code,” “The Lord of the Rings” films and “X2.”

McKellen returning as Gandalf? That’s great news. What do you think?
