Monday film news roundup: Ricky Gervais to host Golden Globes; 'Paranormal Activity 2'?

• Funny man Ricky Gervais will host the 67th annual Golden Globes Jan. 17. The folks at NBC suggested a host may boost the show, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association agreed. Gervais most recently starred in "The Invention of Lying." By the way, look for Globes nominees December 15.

• Ron Livingston is the latest to join Zach Galifianakis, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Lucy Punch in Jay Roach's upcoming "Dinner for Schmucks," a remake of Francis Veber's popular 1998 comedy "Le diner de cons." Livingston recently starred in "The Time Traveler's Wife." (Variety)

Daily news dose: Barry Sonnendeld to helm 'Spellman;' Golden Globes dates announced

Here's your dose of film news for April 2, 2009:

• Barry Sonnenfeld is in talks to direct "The Spellman Files" for Paramount Pictures. The project is based on the novel by Lisa Lutz and follows a private investigator who's having a tough time runnning her family's business and her dating life. Sonnenfeld is also in talks to direct "The How-To Guide for Saving the World." (Variety)

• Here are the dates for the 67th annual Golden Globes: Nov. 6, 2009: Deadline for submission of Golden Globe entry forms; Dec. 15, 2009: Nomination Announcement; Jan. 17, 2010: Presentation of "The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards."

• Idris Elba and Zoe Saldana are the latest to join Jeffrey Dean Morgan in Sylvain White's big-screen adaptation of the DC-Vertigo comic book "The Losers." The story follows a team of black ops commandos trying to survive are after learning their own government has planned to kill them. (The Hollywood Reporter)

• Laura Linney and Jeanne Tripplehorn are joining Leland Orser's indie feature debut "Morning." Tripplehorn is set to play a mother having trouble to overcome the loss of her child, while Linney stars as a grief counselor. Tripplehorn stars on "Big Love." She also appeared in "Very Bad Things." 'Slumdog Millionaire' tops 2009 Golden Globes

"Slumdog Millionaire" topped the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards Sunday with four awards, including best drama.

The drama about an Indian youngster who wins big on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" also won best director for Danny Boyle, best screenplay for Simon Beaufoy, and best original score for A.R. Rahman.

Also scoring big was Kate Winslet, who won best actress in a drama for her role in "Revolutionary Road" and best supporting actress for "The Reader." Meanwhile, Sally Hawkins was named best actress in a musical or comedy for "Happy-Go-Lucky."

On the side of the men, Mickey Rourke took home the prize for best actor in a drama for "The Wrestler," while Heath Ledger won best supporing actor for "The Dark Knight. Colin Farrell won the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy or musical for his performance in "In Bruges."

Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" took best comedy, while "WALL-E" was named best animated film. "Waltz with Bashir" picked up the award for best foreign language film.

66th Annual Golden Globes nominations

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Frost/Nixon" and "Doubt" topped the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards nominations Thursday with five each.

David Fincher's "Button" and Ron Howard's "Frost/Nixon" made it into the category of best drama, along with "The Reader," "Revolutionary Road" and "Slumdog Millionaire."

As far as the best comedy or musical category is concerned, the nominees are "Burn After Reading," "Happy-Go-Lucky," "In Bruges," "Mamma Mia!" and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."

As expected, Anne Hathaway scored a nomination as best actress in a drama for her role in "Rachel Getting Married." She competes against Meryl Streep ("Doubt"), Angelina Jolie ("Changeling"), Kate Winslet ("Revolutionary Road") and Kristin Scott Thomas ("I've Loved You So Long").

Moving on to the best actor in a drama, it includes nominations for Brad Pitt in "Button," Sean Penn in "Milk," Leonardo DiCaprio in "Revolutionary Road," Mickey Rourke in "The Wrestler" and Frank Lamgella in "Frost/Nixon."

Rebecca Hall, Sally Hawkins, Frances McDormand, Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson all go head to head in the category of best actress in a comedy or musical. On the side of the men, the nominees are James Franco, Dustin Hoffman, Javier Bardem, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.
