Review: "Nights in Rodanthe"

The players: Director: George C. Wolfe, Writers: John Romano, Ann Peacock, Cast: Richard Gere, Diane Lane, Christopher Meloni, Viola Davis, Mae Whitman

Facts of interest: Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, author of "The Notebook."

The plot: Two unhappy adults fall in love at a small beachside inn during a magical but stormy weekend.

Our thoughts: I walked into George C. Wolfe’s “Nights in Rodanthe” expecting a sophisticated romance led by two film stars I usually enjoy watching on the big screen, but what I ended up getting in return for the price of admission was nothing but a soapy wannabe love tragedy that misses its mark and fails to stir any deep emotions.

'Nights in Rodanthe' web reviews

The biggest romance of the fall season has arrived. George C. Wolfe's "Nights in Rodanthe" may not be the best, but considering it's based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, it is certainly the sappiest. Hey, and why not? Although I have not seen the film yet (check back for my review tonight), I am eager to find out what online critics have to say about Diane Lane and Richard Gere's chemistry onscreen. Oh yeah, and James Franco is in this too...

• George Roush at LatinoReview: "Night in Rodanthe is a movie that can only appeal to fans of The Notebook and the senior citizens who don’t have bingo on Friday nights."

• Cinema Blend's Katey Rich: "Taking innately charming stars Richard Gere and Diane Lane and stranding them in a glacial plot, the movie doesn't even earn the tears it's so desperate to wring out in the final scenes."

Sometimes I sure love me some good romance, and it looks like George C. Wolfe's "Nights in Rodanthe" will deliver plenty of tears and warm feelings. Hey, after all it's based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. In the film, Richard Gere plays a doctor who falls in love with an unhappily married Diane Lane. "Night" won't open until Sept. 26, but in the meantime, enjoy these eight clips from Yahoo!.

Extended 'Nights in Rodanthe' trailer premieres

They may have had a troubled relationship in Adrian Lyne's 2002 thriller "Unfaithful," but this time, Richard Gere and Diane Lane share a little more love on the big screen. In George C. Wolfe's upcoming romantic drama "Nights in Rodanthe," they play two individuals who are struggling with their own crises and eventually turn to each other for comfort. As you may have expected, the film is based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks.

Yahoo! on Wednesday released an extended version of the trailer, which you can fall in love with just above. Clocking in at four minutes, it shows a little bit too much for my taste. The movie itself looks like just the kind of mature romance you would expect from Sparks, but I generally don't like trailers to tell me the whole story beforehand. The films opens Sept. 26, 2008.
