Review: "Bride Wars"

Seen on: January 9, 2009

The players: Director: Gary Winick, Writers: June Raphael, Casey Wilson, Cast: Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway, Candice Bergen, Kristen Johnston, Bryan Greenberg

Facts of interest: Winick also directed "13 Going On 30" and "Charlotte's Web."

The plot: Two friends go to war after their weddins are accidentally booked on the same day.

Our thoughts: Gary Winick’s latest comedy “Bride Wars” is undoubtedly the first big stinker of 2009. Neither funny nor entertaining, this painfully lame attempt at satirizing the wedding industry offers absolutely nothing but a boring feud between two incredibly stupid characters. Believe it or not, but these two bridezillas are a pain in the neck.

'Bride Wars' web reviews

Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson go to war in Gary Winick's "Bride Wars," a comedy about two best friends who launch into a nasty feud when their wedding dates are accidentally booked on the same date. Let's find out what the Web's critics have to say about this one:

• Brad Brevet at RopeOfSilicon: "Perhaps the female audience will get attached to the notion of a wedding in general, but doesn't that just feed the stereotype this film is apparently attempting to satire?"

Cinematical's Jeffrey M. Anderson: "This was undoubtedly a movie that was sold by its pitch, and then the characters were shoehorned in afterward."

• Katey Rich at CinemaBlend: "It's hard to know which is more disheartening: the concept behind Bride Wars, or the fact that its female creators and stars seem to somehow think it's empowering."

Hathaway and Hudson fight in 'Bride Wars' clip

Wedding fans... are you ready for the ultimate showdown between Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson? In Gary Winick's upcoming comedy "Bride Wars," the two actresses play two best friends who turn into ruhtless enemies after their respective weddings are scheduled on the same day and at the same venue.

The story is obviously ridiculous, and I guess it all comes down to Hudson and Hathaway offering viewers a decent enough battle of the brides. The first trailer didn't particularly win me over, but the exclusive clip from MTV after the jump got at least a smile out of me.

The war between the two brides begins Jan. 9, 2009. Mark it in your calendar, ladies.

Gary Winick to direct 'Rat Bastard'

Gary Winick is set to direct Summit Entertainment’s upcoming comedy “Rat Bastard,” according to Variety.

The trade says the film follows a conman who plots revenge when his old partner steals the loot from their latest grift and hides out by posing as a chef for a family on New York's Upper East Side.

Heather McGowan penned an early version of the script, which Niels Mueller (“The Assassination of Richard Nixon”) is rewriting. Ellen Barkin and Caroline Kaplan are on board to produce.

Winick’s credits include “13 Going on 30” and “Charlotte’s Web.” He recently wrapped shooting for “Bride Wars,” a comedy starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson.
