Saturday film news web roundup: Lars von Trier picks next film; Roland Emmerich talks projects

It's Saturday again, and here's a brief entry with short descriptions and links to film news we either missed or quite honestly didn't have time to add. Here's what you need to know on October 10, 2009:

• Filmmaker Lars von Trier will next write and direct a disaster film titled "Planet Melancholia." Plot details are kept under wraps, but I'm sure we're in for a visually stunning film. Trier last helmed "Antichrist." "Planet Melancholia" should be ready by the time Cannes rolls around in 2011. (The Hollywood Reporter)

• Roland Emmerich recently talked to Coming Soon about some upcoming projects, and he said he will do a film about "how it came to be that William Shakespeare was not the author of his plays." He's also planning a movie titled "Foundation," based on Isaac Asimov's series. More here.

The weekend has come to an end, and here's a list of films news we missed or simply didn't have the time to post:

• During the "Watchmen" DVD panel at Comic-Con, people received a T-shirt showcasing some artwork for Zack Snyder's upcoming movie "Sucker Punch." Check out Deadline Hollywood Daily for the shot of the tee.

• How about some crappy pictures of the "Iron Man 2" footage that was shown at Comic-Con? Well, somebody took these with a camera, and you can enjoy them at Worst Previews.

• Spirit Pictures wants King Kong (pictured above) to return! They've acquired the rights to "Kong: King of Skull Island," a prequel tale to the famous gorilla story. The film will be made using motion-capture technology. Variety has more.

Daily news dose: Affleck to helm Phoenix biopic; J.K. Simmons back for 'Spider-Man 4'

Here's your dose of quick news bits for Jan. 19, 2009...

• Believe it or not, but Casey Affleck will direct a documentary about retired actor Joaquin Phoenix's music career. I'm sure by now you've all heard Phoenix quit acting to become a - guess what - rapper. He's currently working on an album produced by Sean Combs. (The Hollywood Reporter)

• In a recent interview with MTV, actor J.K. Simmons said he would return as J. Jonah Jameson in "Spider-Man 4," which will shoot in 2010 for a 2011 release. “We’ve definitely brainstormed ideas for Triple-J, but I have no desire to make Triple-J more of the focus of those movies. The amount that I did in 1, 2 and 3, is just exactly right," he said.

• Roland Emmerich will direct the big-screen version of Isaac Asimov's sci-fi trilogy "Foundation," which Columbia recently acquired. Variety says the story follows a "psycho-historian who can scientifically read the future sees an imminent empire collapse and prepares to save the knowledge of mankind."

• Antoine Fuqua is planning a biopic about Gregory Scarpa Sr., an FBI informant and chief enforcer for the Colombo crime family. "It's called 'Scarpa' with Morgan Creek, and it's New York again, Brooklyn, FBI, Italian gangsters, it takes place from the '60s to the '90s, and we're talking to Sean Penn," he told ComingSoon.
