Movie Review: “Pandorum”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: September 27, 2009

The players: Director: Christian Alvart, Writer: Travis Milloy, Cast: Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Cam Gigandet, Norman Reedus, Cung Le

Facts of interest: Christian Alvart also directed "Case 39."

The plot: Two members of a spacecraft crew wake up on board and have no clue who they are and what's going on...

Our thoughts: Walk into “Pandorum” with low expectations, and you may be pleasantly surprised. No, Christian Alvart’s sci-fi horror flick is by no means a masterpiece, but it boasts a series of atmospheric scenes and scary moments I found quite enjoyable to watch. In other words, “Pandorum” is not a complete disaster.

So-so motion poster for 'Pandorum' hits

Ben Foster in Pandorum

In case you've missed it, motion posters are the new cool thing to promote films online. They're essentially flash vidoes or other similar files that feature a moving poster. While we've seen a couple of great ones of this kind recently, I've also come across some rather lame ones.

Take the new motion poster for "Pandorum." It's cool they put the effort into making one, but to be honest, this one's getting pretty annoying after, say, three seconds. You can check it out for yourself after the jump, and let me know what you think. I'm not impressed.

Overlong red band trailer for 'Legion' hits

Legion with Paul Bettany

Here's a five-minute red band trailer for Scott Stewart's upcoming fantasy action adventure "Legion," which is set for release Jan. 22, 2010.

In the film, God loses faith in mankind and sends a legion of angels to bring on the Apocalypse. Humanity's only hope lies in a group of strangers trapped in a desert diner and the Archangel Michael (Paul Bettany).

This one gets a big yawn from me. Sure, it looks action-packed, but the story is one failing to grab my attention. Also, some of these special effects just look odd. So much for my opinion.

Dennis Quaid, Kevin Duran, Doug Jones, Kate Walsh, Lucas Black and Tyrese Gibson co-star in "Legion." Check out the loooooong trailer after the jump.

Watch: Three new 'G.I. Joe' TV spots

I admit I'm not particularly looking forward to Stephen Sommers's upcoming action flick "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" anymore, but some of these new TV spots at least look a tad better than earlier ones. (I like the one with the "American Badass" song)

Below you'll find three fast-paced spots for the flick, which opens Aug. 7, 2009. Look closely and you'll see some never-before-seen footage as well. The rest is the same stuff we've already seen, but I feel it's edited down a bit better.

Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sienna Miller , Marlon Wayans and Byung-hun Lee star, among others.

Let me know what you think about "Cobra" at this stage. Something you are excited about, or rather something you couldn't care about less? Personally, I think it all looks a little crappy.

New 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra' photos hit

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

You know, the very first teaser I saw for Stephen Sommers's upcoming action flick "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" didn't look all that bad, but at this stage, I'm not sure what to think about this one.

Later spots and trailers kind of looked crappy, and that not only in terms of special effects. Somehow, the whole thing looks a little cheap. I highly doubt this one will score big at the box office, but then again, you never know.

Anyway, a bunch of new pics from the flick have surfaced online, and you can see two of them here and more at ComingSoon. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dennis Quaid, Sienna Miller (she looks good), Marlon Wayans, Channing Tatum and Byung-hun Lee star.

Let me know what you think about "Cobra" at this stage. Something you are excited about, or rather something you couldn't care about less?

"G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" debuts Aug. 7, 2009.

'The Horsemen' English trailer now online

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are soon coming to a theater near you.

In Jonas Åkerlund's upcoming horror flick "The Horsemen," Dennis Quaid plays Aidan Breslin, a bitter detective emotionally distanced from his two young sons following the untimely death of his devoted wife.

While investigating a series of murders of rare violence, he discovers a terrifying link between himself and the suspects in a chain of murders that seem to be based on the Biblical prophecies concerning the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: War, Famine, Pestilence, and Death.

The official English trailer for the film is now online, and you can check it out after the jump. I'm not entirely sure what to think about it at this time, but judging by its trailer, the film looks just like one of those standard crime/torture flicks. Let's hope it carries a better script than last year's messy "Untraceable."

Ziyi Zhang, Clifton Collins Jr, Barry Shabaka Henley, Peter Stormare co-star. Dave Callaham, who also co-wrote "Doom," penned the screenplay. The film opens Feb. 6, 2009.

Review: "The Express"

Seen on: October 11, 2008

The players: Director: Gary Fleder, Writer: Charles Leavitt, Cast: Dennis Quaid, Rob Brown, Nelsan Ellis, Kris Wolff, Darrin DeWitt Henson

Facts of interest: Based on the book by Robert C. Gallagher.

The plot: The film tells the story of Ernie Davis, the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy.

Our thoughts: As far as inspirational sports movies go, Gary Fleder’s “The Express” hits all the right notes. Based on a true story, it centers on an extraordinary athlete who proved his passion for the game and gave his people a reason to stand up and cheer during a tough time in the history of the United States. Yes, the film mostly plays it by the book, but in this case, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
