'Nothing Like the Holidays' web reviews

Are you in the mood for a holiday family flick? Then Alfredo De Villa's "Nothing Like the Holidays" is just right for you. Starring John Leguizamo, Debra Messing, Vanessa Ferlito, Jay Hernandez, Melonie Diaz, Alfred Molina and many others, the film follows a family's desperate attempt to celebrate a peaceful Christmas. Here's what the Web's critics have to say about it:

• CinemaBlend's Katey Rich: "People do things that are illogical if not outright stupid, and out of character, for the sake of the creaky plot and maybe a laugh."

• Collider's Brian Orndorf: "If the filmmaking fails to a certain degree, the charisma of the performers picks up the slack."

• Kevin Carr at FilmSchoolRejects: "I thought there were some pretty funny moments, most of them courtesy of Luis Guzman and John Leguizamo."

Review: “Nothing Like the Holidays”

Facts of interest: De Villa also directed "Adrift in Manhattan."

The plot: Nothing goes according to plan when the Rodriguez family comes together to celebrate the holidays.

Our thoughts: “Nothing Like the Holidays” is a good alternative to “Four Christmases.” It’s not as silly or as mainstream, but it promotes a similar holiday spirit and will certainly entertain those looking for exactly that. It’s a harmless little film without big surprises, but it has its charm, no doubt.

'Nothing Like the Holidays' gets a trailer

The trailers for the first Christmas flicks this year really start to pour in this week, and Yahoo! recently posted the preview for Alfredo De Villa's "Nothing Like the Holidays," which follows a family struggling with all kinds of troubles and surprises during Christmas time.

John Leguizamo, Debra Messing, Freddy Rodriguez, Melonie Diaz, Jay Hernandez and Luis Guzmán star. "Nothing Like the Holidays" opens Nov. 21, 2008. Somehow I feel I've seen this specific kind of movie many many times before. Oh well, happy holidays everybody. As usual, Christmas comes way early at the movies, and I still don't know why. To get everybody in the mood, maybe? In November already? Enjoy!

Review: "The Women"

The players: Director: Diane English, Writer: Diane English, Cast: Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett-Smith

Facts of interest: Remake of the 1939 classic "The Women."

The plot: The film follows the adventures of four best friends who help support each other in times of misery.

Our quick thoughts: Diane English’s “The Women” is one huge and utterly boring mess. No, I don’t hate this film because I’m a guy or because you think I don’t understand the nature of its subject matter. I sure do appreciate plenty of chick flicks, I always enjoy a good Nancy Meyers film, and I even think quite positively about the two “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” movies.
