By Franck Tabouring
Weekend of August 29 – 31, 2008

Tropic Thunder” ruled the North American box office for the third consecutive weekend with $11.5 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Ben Stiller’s R-rated action comedy easily protected its No. 1 spot from this week’s four new releases, lifting its domestic total to $83.8 million. Released by DreamWorks, the film centers on a group of actors as they fight for survival in a dangerous jungle.

Debuting in second place with only $9.7 million was 20th Century Fox’s science-fiction adventure “Babylon A.D.,” which stars Vin Diesel as a mercenary who escorts a young woman (Mélanie Thierry) from Mongolia to New York City.

Box Office: 'Tropic Thunder' clings to No. 1 spot

By Franck Tabouring

Weekend of August 22 – 24, 2008

Tropic Thunder” topped the North American box office for the second consecutive weekend with $16.1 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Ben Stiller’s critically acclaimed action comedy managed to fend off a bunch of new releases, lifting its domestic total to $65.6 million after a solid two-week run. Starring Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr., the film centers on a group of actors on the run from ruthless criminals.

Following closely in second place was new entry “The House Bunny,” which debuted with $15.1 million. The Fred Wolf-directed comedy stars Anna Faris as a Playboy bunny who becomes the housemother of an unpopular sorority after being tossed out of the mansion.

Opening at No. 3 with $12.2 million was Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Death Race,” in which Jason Statham plays a prisoner who’s forced to participate in a brutal car race.

Review: "Death Race"

Seen on: August 22, 2008

The players: Director: Paul W.S. Anderson, Writer: Paul W.S. Anderson, Cast: Jason Statham, Joan Allen, Ian McShane, Tyrese Gibson, Natalie Martinez

Facts of interest: Based on 1975's "Death Race 2000."

The plot: A man (Statham) is framed for his wife's murder and forced to participate in a brutal car race in which drivers must kill each other on the road to victory.

Our quick thoughts: For the most part, Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Death Race” offers you exactly what the trailer and TV spots promised: brutal, fast-paced car racing. That’s what you should expect if you plan to see the flick, because that’s all you get for the price of admission. Surprisingly, “Race” is not that bad of a big-screen experience. It’s utterly brainless, sure, but it’s also efficient enough to offer some of you a darn good time.

'Death Race' web reviews

Fans of Jason Statham will likely enjoy Paul W.S. Anderson's new action flick "Death Race," in which the actor plays a prisoner who's forced to participate in a deadly race for freedom. Joan Allen, Ian McShane, Tyrese Gibson and Natalie Martinez co-star. While the nation's top critics didn't really give the flick a warm welciome, let's see what the online film fans have to say about it. (I will post my review later on today)

• Brian Orndorf at Collider: "Visually, 'Death Race' is as hackneyed a film as can be. Performance-wise, it's in REM sleep."

Cinematical's James Rocchi: "Anderson seems to take every chance he can to aim the camera through other elements -- smoke, glass, water, flame, iron bars, dust, and so on -- to capture the focus of the shot, and while that device is hardly a hallmark of greatness, it's lively."

• Josh Tyler at CinemaBlend: "This isn’t a particularly smart movie, but it’s a fun movie, and one that delivers on the car killing mayhem it’s supposed to. Paul W.S. Anderson may have a lot of flaws as a filmmaker, but the man knows cheap thrills, and he delivers them here."
