Daily news dose: Shawn Levy to develop 'How to Talk to Girls;' Fincher's 'Torso' not happening?

Here's your dose of quick news bits for Jan. 24, 2008...

• Shawn Levy is set to produce (and maybe direct) the big-screen adaptation of 9-year-old Alec Greven's advice guide "How to Talk to Girls." "The intention is to make a warmhearted comedy, with a tone reminiscent of 'Big,'" Levy told Variety.

• David Fincher's "Torso" project may not happen at Paramount. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the studio failed to extend the rights option, which obviously sucks big time. However: "While the studio still owns Kruger's screenplay, it is in discussions potentially to strike a new option agreement with the comic's writers, to whom the rights reverted." Let's hope this works out!

• Anchor Bay has acquired the North American and Australian distribution rights to "Spread," a David Mackenzie-directed comedy starring Ashton Kutcher and Anne Heche. The actor stars as a womanizer who meets his match in a local waitress. Kutcher co-produced the project. (Variety)

• Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the domestic distribution rights to Duncan Jones' sci-fi thriller "Moon," which stars Sam Rockwell as an astronaut who exeriences a personal encounter while stranded on the moon for a three-year period. Nathan Parker wrote the script. (Variety)

Review: "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”

Seen on: December 25, 2008

The players: Director: David Fincher, Writer: Eric Roth, Cast: Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Jason Flemyng, Taraji P. Henson, Julia Ormond

Facts of interest: Based on a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The plot: After being born under unusual cicrumstances, a man (Brad Pitt) mysteriously starts aging backwards.

Our thoughts: David Fincher’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” is a strikingly emotional and visually intriguing experience. A sophisticated reflection on life, it’s one of those films that get you thinking about your own existence, including what you’ve accomplished so far and what you still plan on achieving in the future. That’s the effect the movie had on me, anyway.

'Curious Case of Benjamin Button' web reviews

It's a busy day today, with five new flicks opening in wide release and some limited ones expanding. I hope to have all of them screened and reviewed by Sunday night. But first, let's see what the Web's critics have to say about David Fincher's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," starring Brad Pitt, Taraji P. Henson and Cate Blanchett.

Cinematical's James Rocchi: "Get past the plot, the pitch, and the technique, and you can see it as a reminder that all we can do is live now."

• Josh Tyler at CinemaBlend: "It’s just that Benjamin Button is a tremendous downer, and a downer without any clear purpose."

RopeOfSilicon's Brad Brevet: "For all its worth, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a masterpiece."

Seven new 'Benjamin Button' movie clips

David Fincher's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is undoubtedly the film I am looking forward to the most this holiday season.

I've been repeatedly watching the trailers and TV spots for quite a while now, and the stunning beauty of the footage just doesn't let go of me. The story, of course, sounds just as compelling.

The film stars Brad Pitt in the role of Benjamin Button, a man who’s born under unusual circumstances and starts aging backwards. Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton and Julia Ormond also star.

Earlier this week, the film took home five Golden Globe nominations, which is a good sign at this stage. Yahoo! recently released seven new clips from the film, and you can check them out below.

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" opens everywhere Dec. 25, 2008. Don't miss it.

Fincher to tackle 'Devil in the White City'?

David Fincher seems to be interested in directing the big-screen adaptation of Erik Larson's "The Devil in the White City," according to ComingSoon.

Eric Roth, screenwriter of Fincher's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," recently revealed this at a press junket.

As for the book, it focuses mainly on the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago and features H.H. Holmes, the first documented serial killer in America.

Roth, who wrote the script, said, "Fincher's actually interested in it. I want to do a whole thing showing how skyscrapers were built. I love the fact that, in Chicago, there's no low ground to put skyscrapers in. There's just water."

Sounds like an interesting project to me. I just realized I have the book lying around here somewhere, although I haven't had a chance to read it yet. Now I've go the perfect opportunity to do so.

International 'Benjamin Button' trailer hits!

I usually prefer domestic trailers to international ones, but the latest trailer for David Fincher's upcoming drama "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is definitely an exception.

As you can see after the jump, this new international preview includes some stunning footage from the anticipated film, which stars Brad Pitt as a man who starts to age backwards after being born under unusual circumstances.

While I certainly enjoyed the first domestic trailer as well, I find this one to be a lot more nuanced, especially because it doesn't reveal that much about the whole story line. And the quality of this footage is just dazzling, don't you think?

Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Julia Ormond and Elias Koteas co-star. "Benjamin Button" comes to theaters Dec. 25, 2008.

No ‘Rendezvous with Rama’ for Fincher?

If you are a die-hard David Fincher fan and you are still looking forward to his big-screen adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s sci-fi novel “Rendezvous with Rama,” I must disappoint you: the project is dead.

Firstshowing.net recently talked to the helmer and asked him about the status of the adaptation, which was supposed to star Morgan Freeman. Sad to say, Fincher believes it’s not going to happen anytime soon.

"It looks like it's not going to happen. There's no script and as you know, [Morgan Freeman's] not in the best of health right now. We've been trying to do it but it's probably not going to happen," he said.

Dang, that really sucks! Apparently, Fincher has been fighting for many years to gather the appropriate funding, but as it turns out, he doesn’t seem to have enough to get the ball rolling on the project.

When I first heard about this plans to bring Clarke’s book to life I was really excited, but this news is a pretty big shock.

Fortunately, Fincher fans will be able to see his latest flick in theaters Dec. 25, 2008. It stars Brad Pitt and is titled “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” The trailer sure looks fantastic.
