David Cronenberg to remake 'The Fly'

Even though filmmaker David Cronenberg previously said he's not into remaking films, he is now heading into development of a reboot of this own classic movie "The Fly" from 1986. Fox will back the project.

The 1986 version of "The Fly" is itself a remake of Kurt Neumann's 1958 flick. It brought in $40 domestically and starred Jeff Goldblum as a scientist who transforms into a fly. Geena Davis co-starred.

David Cronenberg to adapt 'Cosmopolis'

I'm quite excited every time I read something about David Cronenberg, primarily because I've enjoyed so many of his films. "Eastern Promises," his most recent flick, for instance, just blew me away.

Cronenberg is now planning to develop and direct the big-screen adaptation of Don DeLillo's novel "Cosmopolis" with producer Paulo Branco, this according to Variety.

The book, released in 2003, follows a young multimillionaire on a 24-hour odyssey across Manhattan. Toronto and New York have been picked as shooting locations.

Cronenberg also recently talked about developing a sequel to "Eastern Promises." He was also recently circling the adaptation of Robert Ludlum’s political thriller "The Matarese Circle."

Universal preps 'Videodrome' remake

Generally, I don't appreciate remakes because they often represent a lack of ideas in Hollywood to come up with something new. Okay, there are some remakes I enjoyed, but more often than not, I'm hardly impressed by the newer versions. When I first read about Universal getting ready to redo David Cronenberg's great "Videodrome," I almost couldn't believe it.

But yes, the studio will remake the film, with Ehren Kruger ("The Ring," "The Brothers Grimm") writing the screenplay. I don't know about you, but I don't think this is a great idea. I mean, some films out there really deserve to be left alone, and remaking a film like "Videodrome" is just completely unnecessary.

Cronenberg developing 'Eastern Promises' sequel

I love David Cronenberg's "Eastern Promises." It's a dark, nail-biting thriller with a top-notch cast, and I remember Steven Knight’s haunting script and Cronenberg’s first-class direction really pulled me into this film.

Well, believe it or not, but Cronenberg is currently developing a sequel to "Promises." At least that's what he told the folks at MTV:

“We are moving forward with it,” he said. “We all are excited about the idea of doing a sequel.” As MTV points out, "we" includes lead actor Viggo Mortensen, Knight and even Paul Webster, who produced the first film.

Cronenberg has never been a big fan of sequels. “It’s the first time I’ve ever been in a situation where I actually want to do a sequel to something,” he told MTV.

Cronenberg's credits also include "A History of Violence," "Crash," "The Fly," "Scanners" and "Videodrome."

Tom Cruise to face Denzel Washington in 'Matarese'

Tom Cruise is in talks to star in David Cronenberg's upcoming adaptation of Robert Ludlum’s political thriller “The Matarese Circle."

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Cruise would jump into the role of Russian spy Vasili Taleniekov, who's the biggest enemy of American intelligence operative Brandon Scofield (Denzel Washington).

Derek Haas, Michael Brandt and Cronenberg worked on the script, which follows these two men as they are forced to launch into a collaboration to put and end to a political conspiracy run by an organization called the Matarese.

Ludlum also wrote the popular Jason Bourne novels, which were successfully adapted into three excellent big-screen action blockbusters.

Cruise last starred in Bryan Singer's "Valkyrie," in which he delivered a decent enough performance. But another big blockbuster certainly wouldn't hurt.

Washington also has several projects coming up, including "The Book of Eli" and "The Taking of Pelham 123." As for Cronenberg, he recently directed the excellent "Eastern Promises."

Cronenberg to direct ‘Matarese Circle’

David Cronenberg is in talks to helm the big-screen adaptation of Robert Ludlum’s political thriller “The Matarese Circle,” according to Variety.

Denzel Washington may star in the project, which is set against the backdrop of the Cold War and follows an American and a Soviet who team up to foil a plot to topple the world’s governments.

Cronenberg is directing a screenplay by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas.

Ludlum also wrote the popular Jason Bourne novels, which were successfully adapted into three excellent big-screen action blockbusters.

Cronenberg, who usually does not take on genres such as this one, most recently directed “Eastern Promises.” Other recent films include “A History of Violence” and “Spider.”

As for Washington, he was last seen in “The Great Debaters.” He has several projects coming up, including “The Taking of Pelham 123” and “The Book of Eli.”
