Jason Momoa cast as new 'Conan'

Conan the Barbarian is finally cast! As Mike Fleming reported on Deadline, Jason Momoa will play the lead character in Marcus Nispel's Nu Image/Millennium Films remake of John Milius' 1982 action fantasy.

The race came down to Momoa and Kellan Lutz, but Momoa impressed everyone involved in the casting process. The new "Conan" has been in development for a while, but it hit a few bumps along the way.

Now the project is on track for a production start in a couple of months. A release is tentatively set for 2011. As for Momoa, his credits include "Stargate: Atlantis," "North Shore" and "Baywatch," of course.

Marcus Nispel will direct 'Conan' remake

German filmmaker Marcus Nispel will direct Nu Image/Millennium Films' remake of John Milius' 1982 action fantasy "Conan the Barbarian."

Nispel already has three big productions under his belt: 2003's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," "Pathfinder" and the recent "Friday the 13th" remake.

The new "Conan" has been in development for quite a while, but the project hit a few bumps along the way. Brett Ratner was one of the recent candidates to helm the flick, but Nispel finally got the job.

The original "Conan" starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as a warrior who seeks bloody revenge against the man who massacred his tribe. The film was based on stories by Robert E. Howard.
