Talented Cecile de France joins Eastwood drama

Belgian star actress Cécile de France has officially boarded Clint Eastwood's upcoming supernatural thriller "Hereafter," which is currently shooting. Matt Damon is also on board.

Peter Morgan wrote the script, which follows three people touched by death in different ways. Variety says De France is set to play a French journalist having a near-death experience.

"Hereafter" is set for release December 2010. Parts of the film will apparently be shot in San Francisco, which is reason enough for me to keep my eyes wide open everywhere I go in the city.

Review: "Gran Torino"

Seen on: January 10, 2009

The players: Director: Clint Eastwood, Writer: Nick Schenk, Cast: Clint Eastwood, Ahney Her, Brian Haley, Bee Vang

Facts of interest: The song "Gran Torino" was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Box Office: 'Gran Torino' outraces competition

Weekend of January 9 – 11, 2009

Clint Eastwood’s “Gran Torino” raced to the top of the North American box office this weekend with $29 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The film, which stars Eastwood as a veteran bonding with a Hmong teenager, easily shook off its competition after expanding into 2,808 theaters. Its domestic total currently stands at $40 million.

Debuting at No. 2 with $21.5 million was Gary Winick’s latest comedy “Bride Wars,” starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson as best friends who become the worst enemies after their weddings are accidentally booked on the same day.

Meanwhile, new entry “The Unborn” finished third with $21 million. The David S. Goyer-directed horror flick focuses on a young woman (Odette Yustman) haunted by the spirit of an unborn child.

'Gran Torino' web reviews

Clint Eastwood is back with "Gran Torino," a crime drama in which he plays a racist Korean War veteran who develops an unusual relationship with a Hmong immigrant neighbor. I'm excited to see this one this weekend, and so should you. Here's what some online critics have to say about it:

RopeOfSilicon's Brad Brevet: "Gran Torino is a simple story that carries more weight than it should thanks to Eastwood. It will be judged based on Eastwood's involvement which may cause some to overlook its flaws and simply lavish praise."

Joblo's Chris Bumbray: "All in all, 'Gran Torino' was a fairly disapointing film, but still well worth seeing if only for another great Eastwood performance."

• Brian Orndorf at Collider: "Unofficially billed as Eastwood's swan song to acting, 'Torino' certainly returns the star to his fist-first roots with extreme satisfaction."

Eastwood to go supernatural with 'Hereafter'

Clint Eastwood is in negotiations to direct "Hereafter," a supernatural thriller for DreamWorks, according to Variety.

Nothing at all is known about the plot at this point, although the trade says the film is described as in the vein of "The Sixth Sense."

Peter Morgan, whose credits include "The Queen" and "Frost/Nixon," wrote the script.

"Hereafter" would mark the first time Eastwood direct a film of the supernatural genre (I don't think "Space Cowboys" really qualfies as supernatural).

Eastwood most recently helmed "Changeling." His next project, "Gran Torino," opens in limited release Dec. 17, 2008.

Review: "Changeling"

Seen on: October 31, 2008

The players: Director: Clint Eastwood, Writer: J. Michael Straczynski, Cast: Angelina Jolie, Amy Ryan, John Malkovich, Jeffrey Donovan, Riki Lindhome

Facts of interest: "Changeling" is based on a true story.

The plot: The film follows Christine Collins (Angelina Jolie), a mother who's convinced that the boy the police bring back to her is not her kidnapped son.

Our thoughts: The truth is a tricky construct. Words are uttered and, depending on who says them, they are afforded a certain level of belief. Sometimes the truth is so entirely outlandish that believing it is a struggle. And sometimes that struggle is worth it because the truth has the potential to enlighten and call for change. The truth in a movie is almost inherently a falsehood.
