Movie Review: “Where the Wild Things Are”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: October 16, 2009

The players: Director: Spike Jonze, Writers: Spike Jonze, Dave Eggers, Cast: Max Records, Catherine Keener, Mark Ruffalo, Lauren Ambrose, James Gandolfini

Facts of interest: Based on the book by Maurice Sendak.

The plot: The film follows a young boy who imagines he's traveling to a big island inhabited by wild creatures.

Our thoughts: Spike Jonze’s “Where the Wild Things Are” is a fantastic big-screen adventure I absolutely adored even though I never read Maurice Sendak’s beloved book. It’s a film that worked for me for so many reasons, starting with its simple, yet quite meaningful examination of the many complications of childhood.

Awesome 'Where the Wild Things Are' trailer hits

Where the Wild Things Are Movie

Here is the brand-new trailer for Spike Jonze's upcoming adventure "Where the Wild Things Are," and wow... this one is even more awesome than its predecessor.

Based on the popular book by Maurice Sendak, the plot follows Max, a disobedient little boy who's sent to bed without his supper and creates his own world -- a forest inhabited by ferocious wild creatures that crown Max as their ruler.

Catherine Keener, Max Records, Mark Ruffalo, James Gandolfini, Forest Whitaker and Catherine O'Hara are part of the cast. "Wild Things" opens in theaters Oct. 16, 2009, and I have a strong feeling it will deliver the goods big time.

BTW, Jonze's credits also include "Adaptation" and "Being John Malkovich."

Daily news dose: 'Green Lantern' to shoot in Sydney; Patrick Wilson to star in 'Morning Glory'

Here's your dose of film news for April 16, 2009:

• Patrick Wilson is the latest to join Harrison Ford, Rachel McAdams, Diane Keaton and Jeff Goldblum in Roger Michell's comedy "Morning Glory." McAdams will star as a TV news producer who struggles to rescue a morning show by taking control of its difficult anchors (Ford and Keaton). Wilson plays McAdams' romantic partner. (The Hollywood Reporter)

• Catherine Keener has boarded "Percy Jackson," starring alongside Uma Thurman, Pierce Brosnan, Logan Lerman, Kevin McKidd, Melina Kanakaredes and Sean Bean. The story follows Poseidon's 12-year-old half-human son Percy, who sets out to save his mother and prevent a war between gods in modern America. Chris Columbus will direct. (THR)

• Warner's "Green Lantern" will shoot at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Martin Campbell will direct the project from a script by Greg Berlanti and Michael Green. The film's budget is currently set at $150 million. The production of the film will apparently create 500 jobs. Sweet.

• Thomas Dekker, whose credits include "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," is in talks to star as a swim team jock in New Line Cinema's "A Nightmare on Elm Street" reboot, according to ShockTillYouDrop. Jackie Earle Haley and Kyle Gallner star in the horror project, which Samuel Bayer is directing.

Review: "Synecdoche, New York"

Seen on: November 10, 2008

The players: Director: Charlie Kaufman, Writer: Charlie Kaufman, Cast: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Michelle Williams, Samantha Morton, Tilda Swinton

Facts of interest: "Synecdoche, New York" is Kaufman's directorial debut.

The plot: A theater director reflects on his life while trying to put together his latest play.

Our thoughts: It doesn’t take a genius to acknowledge Charlie Kaufman as a genius or something awful close to it. Genius can move the world forward and illuminate the darkest of spaces. Genius can also go right over the heads of all those who are not as fortunate to be counted among the world’s smartest.

Check out the trailer for 'Synecdoche, New York'

Here's the incredibly interesting trailer for Charlie Kaufman's "Synecdoche, New York," which stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as a theater director who attempts to create a life-size replica of New York for his play inside a warehouse. Samantha Morton, Michelle Williams, Catherine Keener, Hope Davis, Emily Watson and Jennifer Jason Leigh co-star.

This most definitely looks like yet another tour-de-force performance by Hoffman. I haven't had the chance yet to see the flick, but if you've seen it, please let me know. "Synecdoche, New York" opens in limited release Oct. 24, 2008.

Brilliant 'The Soloist' trailer debuts online

Yahoo! Movies just premiered the trailer for Joe Wright's upcoming drama "The Soloist," which stars Robert Downey Jr. as a journalist who accidentally runs into a homeless musical genius (Jamie Foxx) in Los Angeles. Susannah Grant wrote the screenplay based on Steve Lopez's book.

The only thing I can say at this point is that this beautiful trailer gave me the goosebumps. Aside the gorgeous music and the introduction to a solid story about a powerful friendship, this footage also promises two tour-de-force performances by Downey Jr. and Foxx. Academy Awards, here they come! "The Soloist" opens Nov. 21, 2008.

Check out the ‘What Just Happened?’ trailer

Barry Levinson’s upcoming comedy “What Just Happened?” premiered at Cannes last May, but critics didn’t exactly give the film the warm welcome everyone expected. As far as the story is concerned, the flick stars Robert De Niro as a Hollywood producer who struggles with his personal life and his work. Bruce Willis, Stanley Tucci, John Turturro and Catherine Keener co-star.

Above you can check out the first trailer for the movie, which is scheduled to open Oct. 3, 2008. Although the basic story line sure sounds interesting, the footage here didn’t really win me over. I know critics always react a lot meaner to new flicks at Cannes (don’t ask me why), but what I’ve read so far about “What Just Happened?” doesn’t sound all too exciting. Feel free to comment on the trailer just below.
