'Transformers 3' dominates 'Horrible Bosses'

Michael Bay's explosive 3D sequel "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" crushed its competition Friday with an estimated $14.9 million in ticket sales. The third film in the insanely popular series brought its domestic total to a strong $228.8 million.

Following in second place was new release "Horrible Bosses," which performed rather well with $9.9 million from 3,040 sites. The comedy starring Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis scored an average of $3,263 per theater.

At No. 3, Kevin James' new comedy "Zookeeper" finished with $7.4 million. The Sony release is currently playing at 3,482 sites. Pixar's sequel "Cars 2" followed in fourth place with $4.8 million Friday, lifting its domestic cume to $138.4 million.

Box Office: 'Cars 2' finishes first with $68M!

The weekend at the movies belonged to the new releases, because "Cars 2" and "Bad Teacher" took over the North American box office, leaving their competition in the dust. Pixar's sequel to "Cars," for instance, grabbed a strong $68 million.

That's right! "Cars 2" earned $8 million more than its predecessor, which comes as quite a surprise, considering the buzz around this film was clearly lower than that for, let's say, "Toy Story 3." Even critics didn't welcome "Cars 2" as warmly as they usually do a Pixar flick.

At No. 2, Cameron Diaz's comedy "Bad Teacher" bagged a strong $31 million from showings at 3,049 sites. In the film, Diaz plays a rough teacher shaking things up at a school. Yes, those two films alone brought in $100 million this weekend.

Ranking all Pixar Films!

No other movie studio has had near the track record of excellence as the Northern California based Pixar. Originally founded as a digital animation house for George Lucas, Pixar made a huge splash in 1995 with the first ever computer-animated full-length feature “Toy Story.”

Since then, they have had an unprecedented run of success with 10 more films – all both critical successes and box office hits. "Finding Nemo," "Monsters, INC.," "WALL-E" and "The Incredibles" are just a few of them. You know, you've seen 'em all...

With the release of Pixar’s 12th major motion picture, “Cars 2,” I thought it might be a good time to take a look back at all the magic that Pixar has created over the years by reviewing each of the previous films and ranking them in order of (in my most humble of opinions) best to worst.

Movie Review: "Cars 2"

Seen on: June 15, 2011

The players: Directors: John Lasseter, Brad Lewis, Writers: John Lasseter, Ben Queen, Cast: Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer

Fact of interest: The character of Finn McMissile was originally written in the first flick as the lead in a movie Lightning and Sally see at the end.

The plot: Best Friends Lightning McQueen and Mater head off around the world for a series of big races. On the trip, Mater gets mistaken for a spy, and troubke ensues.

Our thoughts: It’s summertime again, and that inevitably means we're in for another masterpiece from the creative geniuses at the Pixar animation house. With 11 films under their belt already,  and every single one a critical and commercial smash hit, expectations run sky high with each new offering.

This week's new movie releases - June 24, 2011

It's time for the return of Pixar! The creators of some of cinema's greatest animated flicks are back in theaters with a sequel this weekend, while Cameron Diaz goes all bad in a new comedy written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. Let's take a closer look.

CARS 2, with the voices of Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy and Michael Caine

Yes, the talking cars are indeed back for a second adventure, as Pixar's "Cars 2" aims at taking over the box office all while keeping cinemagoers energized and happy. While I am not a fan of sequels in the world of animation, I admit I keep my expectations high for this one.

Watch this new clip from 'Cars 2'

Care for another clip from Pixar's upcoming animated sequel "Cars 2"? Go right ahead and check it out after the jump. This footage focuses on Lightning McQueen's first meeting with his new rival Francesco (John Turturro). Nothing too special going on here.

Helmed by John Lasseter and Brad Lewis, the sequel to the aninmated hit flick follows McQueen as he teams up with his best friend Mater for an international adventure as they go up against the world's fastest cars. Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy star.

"Cars 2" opens June 24, 2011, and while I loved the first film, I am not quite convinced of this sequel's potential. Pixar better hit us with a big surprise on the screen.

Quick teaser for Pixar's 'Cars 2'

Okay, Pixar's "Cars" was definitely not the best of the studio's recent films, but I still enjoyed watching the talking cars race around and I've never been opposed to a sequel. It's coming June 24, 2011.

Pixar today released a short teaser trailer that marks the return of Lightning McQueen and gives us a first look at the film's official logo (not too different from the first one, in fact). You can check it out below.

All the world's a racetrack as racing superstar Lightning McQueen zooms back into action, with his best friend Mater in tow, to take on the globe's fastest and finest in this thrilling high-octane new installment.

Here's what Pixar's 'Cars 2' will be about

As you may have heard already, Pixar is developing "Cars 2," and the last thing I heard about the film was that Walt Disney moved up the release date for the Brad Lewis-helmed animated film from 2012 to 2011. Today I have more details about the sequel.

During a presentation in London, Pixar man John Lasseter had quite a few things to say about the plot of "Cars 2," and Empire has all the details. After the jump, find out what to expect from Lightning McQueen and his fellow cars...

Captain Jack will be back for fourth ‘Pirates’

It’s been quite a day for Disney. Besides announcing that “Cars 2” will hit theaters in 2011 and Johnny Depp will play the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” the studio also revealed new information about several other upcoming films.

As Variety reports, Depp has also agreed to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow for a fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” flick. That’s all the information we have about that project at this stage.

Additionally, Depp will play Tonto in the adaptation of “The Lone Ranger.” Wow, looks like he's going to be really busy working on this close relationship with Disney.

Unfortunately, Jerry Bruckheimer and Nicholas Cage also announced a third “National Treasure” flick. I really don’t think making a fourth “Pirates” is a good idea, but another “Treasure”? Why doesn’t anyone come up with something new and original anymore?

Despite the sequel mania at today’s presentation, the fact that Depp boarded “Alice in Wonderland” is good news indeed. What do you guys think about all these announcements? Are you loving it? Or are you sick of Disney?
