Daily news dose: Anthony Mackie checks into 'Adjustment Bureau;' Moritz Bleibtreu is Mephisto

Anthony Mackie

Here is your dose of film news bits for Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009:

• Anthony Mackie ("The Hurt Locker") has signed on to star in George Nolfi's upcoming thriller "The Adjustment Bureau," based on a short story by Philip K. Dick. Matt Damon is on board to star as a promising congressman whose career takes a turn when he meets a beautiful ballet dancer, played by Emily Blunt. (Variety)

• German actor Moritz Bleibtreu, who was recently seen in "Der Baader Meinhof Komplex," will play Mephisto in Oskar Roehler's big-screen version of Goethe's "Faust." Of course, the film follows the classic story of a desperate man selling his soul to the devil for knowledge. I clearly remember this one from high school.

Kevin Smith's 'Couple of Dicks' may get new title

Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan in A Couple of Dicks

Kevin Smith's next comedy is called "A Couple of Dicks," but according to the filmmaker, that title may change before the film opens in theaters Feb. 26, 2009.

At Comic-Con, Smith said some television networks refuse to air spots for the film before 9 p.m. The reason: the title, of course.

Smith already had trouble marketing his previous flick "Zack and Miri Make a Porno." In many ads, the film's title was changed to "Zack and Miri."

Apparently, nobody learned a valuable lesson here, and consequently, "Dicks" will likely be retitled. By the way, the networks with wet pants are ABC, NBC and CBS.

First 'Surrogates' trailer pops up online

The first trailer for Jonathan Mostow's upcoming sci-fi action flick "Surrogates" has debuted online, and you can check it out below. Robot flicks are all over the big-screen these days, and this one is no different: the film is set in a futuristic world where humans live in isolation and interact vicariously through surrogate robots. Bruce Willis plays a cop forced to leave his home for the first time in years to investigate the murders of some of these surrogates.

The cast also includes Ving Rhames, Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, James Francis Ginty and Michael O'Toole. "Surrogates" is based on a graphic novel, and even though I can't say I'm overly excited about this first trailer, I still admit I'm curious to find out how intriguing the film is when it opens in theaters Sept. 25, 2009. Share your trailer thoughts after the jump.

Check out the ‘What Just Happened?’ trailer

Barry Levinson’s upcoming comedy “What Just Happened?” premiered at Cannes last May, but critics didn’t exactly give the film the warm welcome everyone expected. As far as the story is concerned, the flick stars Robert De Niro as a Hollywood producer who struggles with his personal life and his work. Bruce Willis, Stanley Tucci, John Turturro and Catherine Keener co-star.

Above you can check out the first trailer for the movie, which is scheduled to open Oct. 3, 2008. Although the basic story line sure sounds interesting, the footage here didn’t really win me over. I know critics always react a lot meaner to new flicks at Cannes (don’t ask me why), but what I’ve read so far about “What Just Happened?” doesn’t sound all too exciting. Feel free to comment on the trailer just below.
