Exclusive Interview: 'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World' director Edgar Wright and actor Brandon Routh

Edgar Wright, director of "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz," recently stopped by in San Francisco to promote "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," and the man sat down with me to chat about the film.

Enjoy the uncut interview below. Wright chats about video games, adapting the graphic novels and having a lot of freedom in terms of creating his vision. He was joined by actor Brandon Routh.

"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" follows a dude names Scott, who falls in love with a chick but realizes he must first defeat her seven evil exes. It sounds cool, and it really is. You can read my review here...

Movie Review: "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World"

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: July 26, 2010

The players: Director: Edgar Wright, Writers: Edgar Wright, Michael Bacall, Cast: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Brandon Routh

Facts of interest: Wright also helmed "Hot Fuzz" and "Shaun of the Dead."

The plot: A guy (Michael Cera) must defeat his new girl's seven evil exes if he wants to date her.

Our thoughts: Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” is one of the craziest big-screen experiences I’ve ever had, but I say that in a positive way. It’s an insanely cool and wildly entertaining ride that pulls you right into its colorful, wacky world, and it lets you be part of an explosive adventure stuffed with eccentric characters, solid action, decent humor and some awesome visuals. Let’s dive right into the game.

This is a project I've been looking forward to ever since it was announced, and judging by all the images and trailers I have seen, it's in the race to kick some serious ass this summer. At least I hope it will.

this new international trailer delivers the good as well, and if you're not yet hooked to this, I'm sure this one will at least get your attention. Film is based on Bryan Lee O’Malle's graphic novel.

Chris Evans, Brandon Routh board 'Scott Pilgrim'

Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Brie Larson, Mae Whitman, Ellen Wong and Anna Kendrick are the latest to join Edgar Wright’s upcoming action comedy “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World."

Based on the graphic novel by Bryan Lee O’Malle, the film centers on a guy who has to defeat his new girlfriend’s seven ex-boyfriends. Michael Cera will play titular character Scott Pilgrim, while Mary Elizabeth Winstead will take over the role of his love interest.

The Hollywood Reporter has more information about who the new cast members will play:

"Evans plays evil boyfriend No. 2, Lucas Lee, a pro skateboarder-turned-movie star, while Routh plays the third evil boyfriend, Todd Ingram, a rocker with vegan psychic powers. Larson plays Pilgrim's ex-girlfriend, Envy Adams, for whom he still has feelings.

Also joining the pic, which will shoot Toronto, are Mae Whitman as Roxy Richter, the fourth ex, a female who is half-ninja; Ellen Wong as Knives Chau, who Pilgrim is dating when he meets his dream girl; and Anna Kendrick as Pilgrim's sister."

Darn, that's quite the supporting cast. Just last week, Kieran Culkin also joined the project. He will be playing Pilgrim's responsible gay roomate, with whom he shares a bed (Pilgrim, however, is heterosexual).

I never read the garphic novel, so feel free to share what you think about it just below.

Four more board ‘Unthinkable’

Brandon Routh, Gil Bellows and Martin Donovan are set to star in Gregor Jordan’s upcoming action thriller “Unthinkable,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Also starring Samuel L. Jackson, Carrie-Anne Moss and Michael Sheen, the film centers on a black-ops interrogator who teams up with an FBI agent to press a suspect into revealing the locations of three nuclear weapons.

The trade says Routh and Bellows stars as agents of an FBI anti-terrorism team, while Donovan plays an FBI director. Sheen plays the suspect questioned by Jackson and Moss.

Routh, the star of Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns,” will next appear in Kevin Smith’s “Zack and Miri Make a Porno.” Bellows’ credits include “The Promotion” and “The Weather Man.”

As for Donovan, he recently starred in television’s “Ghost Whisperer,” “The Dead Zone” and “Weeds.” He can next be seen in “The Haunting in Connecticut.”
