Movie Review: 'Green Lantern'

Seen on: June 15, 2011

The players: Director: Martin Campbell, Writers: Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong

Facts of interest: Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, and Zack Snyder were all at one point approached to helm this film.

The plot: Hal Jordan (Reynolds), a talented yet arrogant test pilot, is the chosen recipient of a mysterious green ring that grants him both superhuman powers and entry into an elite corps of intergalactic warriors. This group is charged with saving the universe from the evil Parallax.

Our thoughts: Comic book fans have always endured a certain amount of mockery that superhero stories are just for kids or grown-ups suffering from arrested development. Well, "Green Lantern," Warner's staggering $300 million dollar train wreck won’t help matters. Worse yet, director Martin Campbell (who famously resurrected the James Bond franchise) can't decide who his target audience is.

Another new clip from 'Green Lantern' surfaces

Still unsure about whether to drop $10 or more to see "Green Lantern"? Me too. Warner Bros. must be sensing the lack of buzz surrounding the film as they have released multiple clips of it in the past 24 hours. Check out this new footage from the film below. Excited?

In the film, a test pilot (Ryan Reynolds) is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe. Blake Lively and Peter Sarsgaard co-star.

Movie Review: 'The Town'

Seen on: September 9, 2010

The players: Director: Ben Affleck, Writers: Ben Affleck, Peter Craig, Aaron Stockard, Cast: Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner, Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm

Facts of interest: Based on the novel by Chuck Hogan.

The plot: Affleck plays a bank robber who has a big heist to plan and falls for a bank manager he briefly kidnapped during a job.

Our thoughts: Ben Affleck delivers a tour de force with his new heist thriller “The Town”, but he scores not only as an actor, but also as a now established director with a great eye and a feeling for optimal pacing. “The Town” is a dark, beautifully shot film that combines captivating action sequences with flawless acting to offer a character-driven tale cinemagoers should have no trouble enjoying throughout.

Will Mark Strong play Sinestro in 'Green Lantern'

Who will play Sinestro in 'Green Lantern'? It may be this guy...

Mark Strong has already proven he's got what it takes to play a great villain, and according to director Martin Campbell, he may step into the role of Sinestro in the upcoming Warner Bros. flick "Green Lantern."

Speaking excusively with MTV, director Campbell said Strong is in fact in negotiations to play one of the villains in the film that also stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively and Peter Sarsgaard.

Early rumors suggested Jackie Earle Haley could play Sinestro, but Campbell said he never heard anything about it. On Mark Strong, he said, "He's not only a wonderful actor, but he looks like Sinestro."

Strong is currently onscreen as the main villain in "Sherlock Holmes," and he will soon also be seen as the bad guy in "Kick-Ass." He will also star in "Robin Hood," "The Way Back" and "The Eagle of the Ninth."

With leads cast, 'Green Lantern' now finds its main villain!

Peter Sarsgaard may slip into the role of the villain in Martin Campbell's upcoming action adventure "Green Lantern," which should start shooting in a couple of months. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are also on board.

The Hollywood Reporter says Sarsgaard is in talks to play Dr. Hector Hammond, a pathologist who is seen as a loser by his father. He acquires some badass powers when he finds a meteor and will eventually clash with the film's hero.

Reynolds plays Hal Jordan, a test pilot who comes into possession of a ring that holds great powers and later helps him become Green Lantern. Blake Lively will play Carol Ferris, who runs an aerospace company and hires Jordan.

Blake Lively is the female lead in 'Green Lantern'

TV star actress lands role in upcoming superhero flick

"Gossip Girl" star Blake Lively has scored the role of the leading lady in Martin Campbell's upcoming superhero adventure "Green Lantern." Warner Bros. is developing the big-screen adaptation, and Ryan Reynolds stars as the lead actor.

Heat Vision reports Lively will play Carol Ferris, who runs an aerospace company and hires Reynolds' Hal Jordan, a test pilot who comes into possession of a ring that holds great powers and later helps him become Green Lantern.

Lively seems like someone who could pull this off. I've never watched "Gossip Girl," but she delivered some solid performances in the two "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" flicks and even "Accepted." She will soon be seen in "The Town."

Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Michael Green, and Michael Goldenberg all worked on the "Lantern" script. The film is currently slated for release June 17, 2011. Now casting for villains will begin.
