'Soul Men' web reviews

In Malcolm D. Lee's comedy "Soul Men," Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson stars as two soul legends who embark on a road trip to participate in a tribute at the Apollo in Memphis, Tenn. I can't say I loved the movie, but the performances of the two lead actors sure kept me awake. Let's see what the Web's critics have to say about it:

• Brian Orndorf at Collider: "It should come as no surprise that Mac and Jackson work beautifully together."

• Katey Rich at Cinema Blend: "What keeps the movie going is the music, both in hearing The Real Deal's old songs and Floyd and Louis's occasional performances."

Cinematical's Jeffrey M. Anderson: "Mac and Jackson are even better offstage."

Review: "Soul Men"

Seen on: November 8, 2008

The players: Director: Malcolm D. Lee, Writers: Matthew Stone, Robert Ramsey, Cast: Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, Sharon Leal, Affion Crockett, P.J. Byrne, Sharon Leal, Isaac Hayes

Facts of interest: This is not Mac's final movie. His last one is "Old Dogs," due in theaters 2009.

The plot: Two soul legends try to settle their differences and reunite for a tribute to their recently deceased front man.

Our thoughts: “Soul Men” is Bernie Mac’s first movie to open since his death back in August, so it’s obviously quite an emotional experience to see this great comedian doing what he does best on the big screen. The film itself is certainly not one of this year’s funniest, but Mac and co-actor Samuel L. Jackson bring along enough energy to make this ride a decent one.

Review: “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa”

Seen on: November 7, 2008

The players: Directors: Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath, Writers: Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath, Etan Cohen, Voice cast: Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett-Smith, David Schwimmer, Sacha Baron Cohen, Bernie Mac

Facts of interest: This is not the last "Madagascar." A third one is on the way already.

The plot: This time, Alex, Gloria, Melman and Marty try to fly back home to New York. Unfortunately, they end up crash-landing somewhere in Africa.

Our thoughts: “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” feels more like a déjà vu than an all-new animated adventure starring familiar characters. The sequel to the 2005 DreamWorks Animation hit “Madagascar” lacks all the ingredients of an inventive sequel, offering instead a boring 89-minute show with a shallow story and plenty of rehashed gags.

Bernie Mac, 1957 - 2008

Bernie Mac, a Golden Globe nominated comic actor known for his roles in “The Bernie Mac Show” and the “Ocean’s Eleven” films, died of complications from pneumonia Saturday in a Chicago area hospital. He was 50.

Born into a rough Chicago neighborhood in 1957, Mac turned to stand-up comedy at an early age. He celebrated his big-screen debut in a small role in Peter MacDonald’s crime comedy “Mo’Money.”

During the ‘90s, Mac took on several minor roles in feature films, including “Friday,” “Get on the Bus” and “How to Be a Player.”

In 2001, Mac starred as Frank Catton alongside George Clooney in Steven Soderbergh’s remake of “Ocean’s Eleven.” He reprised this role in 2004’s “Ocean’s Twelve” and last year’s sequel “Ocean’s Thirteen.”

Other bigger roles that helped Mac’s fame in Hollywood included “Charlie’s Angels” Full Throttle,” “Mr. 3000” and “Bad Santa.”
