John Hamburg gives 'Little Fockers' update

Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Teri Polo and Blythe Danner are all expected to return for "Little Fockers," the latest sequel to the popular "Meet the Parents" comedy. Here are the latest news:

IGN recently caught up with screenwriter John Hamburg, and the writer/director said he's currently rewriting a script by Larry Stuckey. He also had this to say about the plot of the follow-up to "Meet the Fockers":

"We're catching up with these characters five years later and Pam and Greg have twins so they are dealing with that. And people are dealing with where there at in their lives, and themes of death and divorce and all these real things that as we get older, we start to think about, but in a really comic way."

Hamburg also told IGN that Owen Wilson will have a bigger role in the film. As for Jay Roach, who helmed the first two films, he will not return to direct because he's currently focusing on "Dinner for Schmucks" instead.

By the way, Hamburg also pointed out that he's thinking about doing a sequel to the recent comedy "I Love You, Man." Read more here.

'Museum' defeats 'Salvation' at Friday box office

Shawn Levy's "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" took over the North American box office lead Friday with an estimated $15.3 million in ticket sales.

Starring Ben Stiller, the film scored $3 million more on opening day than its 2006 predecessor "Night at the Museum." The sequel follows main character Larry Daley as he heads to the Smithsonian to rescue his pals from the hands of a ruthless Egyptian leader (Hank Azaria).

Thursday's box office winner "Terminator Salvation" slipped to No. 2 Friday, taking home $14.8 million for an impressive two-day total gross of $28.2 million. Directed by McG, the action spectacle stars Christian Bale as John Connor, who leads the resistance in the war against the machines.

At No. 3, Ron Howard's "Angels & Demons" pulled in $6 million, reaching a domestic total of $66.1 million. Following in fourth place with $5.7 million was J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" reboot, which brought its cume to $167.4 million.

Movie Review: “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian”

Seen on: May 22, 2009

The players: Director: Shawn Levy, Writers: Robert Ben Garant, Thomas Lennon, Cast: Ben Stiller, Amy Adams, Hank Azaria, Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan

Facts of interest: Shawn Levy also directed "Night at the Museum" and "Cheaper by the Dozen."

The plot: This time, Ben Stiller heads to the Smithsonian, where he has to rescue his pals from the hands of an evil Egyptian leader.

Our quick thoughts: Having two monkeys repeatedly slap Ben Stiller is not exactly my idea of great humor, but that’s exactly what you get in Shawn Levy’s “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” an unnecessary sequel that I cannot help but count among the most boring films I’ve seen so far this year.

'Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian' web reviews

Ben Stiller and Amy Adams in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

Shawn Levy returns with "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian," which follows Ben Stiller as he embarks on a new mission at the Smithsonian. The cast also includes Owen Wilson, Amy Adams, Robin Williams, Bill Hader, and Ricky Gervais, and here is what the Web's critics have to say about the film:

• Ron Henriques at LatinoReview: "This sequel doesn't really feel like it has any real story, just a lame excuse to put Stiller back in the same situation again and having him run around a national institution like it was a toy store."

CinemaBlend's Katey Rich: "So take your kids, enjoy the zooming action and the slightly nerdy reverence for the past, and try not to think about what this delightful concept might have been in the hands of a tighter, more aware director."

Cinematical's Eric D. Snider: "You know how it goes: the plot is inane, but a lot of the dialogue makes you laugh."

RopeOfSilicon's Brad Brevet: "The film has pretty colors, loud noises and a little monkey. I mean, what more could a kid want from a film?"

• Brian Orndorf at BrianOrndorf.com: "While only showing minimal overall improvement over the preceding museum adventure, 'Battle of the Smithsonian' at least finds a suitable resuscitation of the core concept.
