Box Office: 'Bangkok' leads slow weekend

By Franck Tabouring
Weekend of September 5 – 7, 2008

Nicholas Cage’s latest action vehicle “Bangkok Dangerous” topped the North American box office this weekend with $7.8 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Danny and Oxide Pang’s remake ended the three-week reign of DreamWorks’ “Tropic Thunder,” leading an incredibly slow weekend as the only nationwide release. In the film, Cage stars as a lonely hit man who travels to Bangkok and falls in love with a local woman.

Ben Stiller’s action comedy closely followed at No. 2, earning $7.5 million and reaching a domestic total of $96.8 million after four weeks in release. With Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. in the lead roles, the flick centers on a group of actors as they fight for survival in a dangerous jungle.

Meanwhile, “The House Bunny” climbed back up to No. 3, collecting $5.9 million. Starring Anna Faris as a former Playboy bunny who becomes the housemother of a geeky sorority, the Fred Wolf-directed comedy lifted its cumulative gross to $36.9 million.

Review: "Bangkok Dangerous"

Seen on: September 5, 2008

The players: Directors: Oxide Pang, Danny Pang, Writer: Jason Richman, Cast: Nicolas Cage, Shaun Delaney, Steve Baldocchi, Charlie Yeung, Shahkrit Yamnarm

Facts of interest: Remake of the Pangs' 1999 flick of the same title.

The plot: A hit man gets into trouble after he travels to Bangkok and falls in love with a local.

Our quick thoughts: “Bangkok Dangerous” may not be as disastrous as I expected, but it sure is the perfect example of what happens to a remake going through the big, predictable Hollywood machine. In short, this means you’re in for an unsurprising action flick with a monotonous plot, insufficient suspense and only a few entertaining sequences.

'Bangkok Dangerous' web reviews

Nicholas Cage is back on the big screen, and it seems his hair still hasn't improved. In Danny and Oxide Pang's "Bangkok Dangerous," he plays a hit man who travels to Bangkok for a job but ends up falling in love with a local. I'll check out the flick myself later today and will post me review soon, but for now, let's see what the online film community has to say about this:

• Katey Rich at Cinema Blend: "The Pangs take great care in creating gorgeous shots, and establishing an enchanting, slightly mystical sense of place. The problem is that it all just seems silly when folded into the shoot-'em-up plot."

Cinematical's William Goss: "It's fairly identical to the Pangs' original screenplay, but this version has still been punched up by the States' own Jason Richman to ensure that no cliché went unturned in the translation."

New 'Bangkok Dangerous' clip hits

Danny and Oxide Pang's remake "Bangkok Dangerous" opens nationwide this weekend, and today we got a new clip for you courtesy of Yahoo! Movies. In the film, Nicholas Cage stars as a hit man whose job takes him to Bangkok, where he falls in love with a local woman and bonds with an errand boy.

In the clip above, you get to see Cage ride the bike and wasting some bullets. It's nothing spectacular, but it may give you a taste of what to expect in the flick. Enjoy.
