Box Office: 'Tropic Thunder' prevails yet again

By Franck Tabouring
Weekend of August 29 – 31, 2008

Tropic Thunder” ruled the North American box office for the third consecutive weekend with $11.5 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Ben Stiller’s R-rated action comedy easily protected its No. 1 spot from this week’s four new releases, lifting its domestic total to $83.8 million. Released by DreamWorks, the film centers on a group of actors as they fight for survival in a dangerous jungle.

Debuting in second place with only $9.7 million was 20th Century Fox’s science-fiction adventure “Babylon A.D.,” which stars Vin Diesel as a mercenary who escorts a young woman (Mélanie Thierry) from Mongolia to New York City.

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s summer hit “The Dark Knight” climbed back up to No. 3, earning $8.7 million and reaching a total gross of an impressive $502.4 million after seven weeks in release.

Screening Room: "College" and "Babylon A.D."

The Screening Room is the latest feature here at The Screening Log. In short, this section includes very short video reviews of some or all of the new theatrical releases. In our first edition, we take a look at "College" and "Babylon A.D." If you check back with us in the coming days, you'll also find reviews of "Traitor" and "Disaster Movie."

Most of these video reviews are directly tied to our written ones, although sometimes they may differ (if written or recorded by a different critic). Also, don't expect us to go into every detail in these video takes. This is just a brief overview with one-sentence synopses and our general point of view. Sit back, relax, and enjoy.

Review: “Babylon A.D.”

Seen on: August 29, 2008

The players: Director: Mathieu Kassovitz, Writers: Eric Besnard, Mathieu Kassovitz, Cast: Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, Melanie Thierry, Lambert Wilson, Gerard Depardieu

Facts of interest: Based on the novel by Maurice G. Dantec.

The plot: A mercenary (Diesel) agrees to escort a young woman from Mongolia to New York.

Our quick thoughts: When a director trashes his own movie just a few days before its theatrical release, you known it can’t be good. Earlier this week, French helmer Mathieu Kassovitz said he’s quite unhappy with his latest action flick “Babylon A.D.,” citing strong studio interference as one example of a terrible experience on the set.

Angry about not being able to do with the scenes what he originally intended to, Kassovitz even called the movie violent and stupid. And who can blame him for telling the truth?

Mathieu Kassovitz dissatisfied with 'Babylon A.D.'

Mathieu Kassovitz is not exactly a happy man right now. Talking to AMC, the French director said he's not at all happy with the production of his newest action flick "Babylon A.D.," which opens nationwide this Friday.

"I'm very unhappy with the film," he told AMC. "I never had a chance to do one scene the way it was written or the way I wanted it to be. The script wasn't respected. Bad producers, bad partners, it was a terrible experience."

Based on a novel by Maurice G. Dantec, the futuristic thriller stars Vin Diesel as a mercenary who agrees to escort a young woman from Russia to the United States.

Kassovitz said he always had a deep interest in the book because of its strong thematic. Unfortunately, not much of that made it into the big-screen adaptation. "It's pure violence and stupidity," he said.

Really? I completely understand that many directors out there are not satisfied with their passion projects because studios often tend to ruin everyone's flip (in this case Fox, apparently), but why would he trash his own flick just a couple of days before the release? Doesn't he care at all?

Okay, as you can see in the article right here, Kassovitz at least likes some of the film's action sequences. Then again, he also doesn't seem too enthusiastic about the flick's release and potential box office performance.

In case you didn't know, Kassovitz's directing credits include "La Haine," "Les Rivières pourpres" ("The Crimson Rivers") and "Gothika."
