Danny Boyle wins DGA award for 'Slumdog'

Danny Boyle took home the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for "Slumdog Millionaire."

Also competing for the top award were David Fincher ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"), Gus Van Sant ("Milk"), Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight") and Ron Howard ("Frost/Nixon").

"If I can get here, you can get here," Boyle said during his speech. Boyle's previous directing credits include "Sunshine," "28 Days Later..." and "Trainspotting."

Ari Folman won the award for best documentary for "Waltz with Bashir," while Jay Roach was named best director of a movie for television for "Recount."

Dan Attias won the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in dramatic series night for "The Wire" ("Transitions"), Paul Feig won in the comedy series category for "The Office" ("Dinner Party") and Tony Croll took home the award in the reality program category for "America's Next Top Model" ("1002").

Other winners included Brent Gunts for the opening ceremony at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, Larry Carpenter for daytime serials for "One Life to Live" ("So You Think You Can Be Shane Morasco's Father?"), Peter Thwaites for commercials and Amy Schatz for children's programs ("Classical Baby").

Daily news dose: Billy Ray to adapt 'Conjure Wife,' Gordon joins Gainsbourg biopic

Here's your dose of quick news bits for Dec. 18, 2008...

• Billy Ray is set to direct the big-screen adaptation of Fritz Leiber Jr.'s horror fantasy novel "Conjure Wife," about a college professor who finds out his good fortune is the result of his wife's magical powers. This marks the fourth time the book has been adapted to the screen. (THR)

• Lucy Gordon is the latest to board Joann Sfar's French movie about the life and fame of poet, songwriter and singer Serge Gainsbourg. Also starring are Eric Elmosnino, Laetitia Casta and Mylene Jampanoi. Gordon's credits include "Spider-Man 3" and "Serendipity. (THR)

• Maggie Q has officialy boarded "King of Fighters," a live-action adaptation of the Japanese video game. Directed by Gordon Chan and starring Sean Faris, Ray Park and Will Yun Lee, the film follows a young man who competes in a fighting tournament. Q will next be seen in "New York, I Love You." (Variety)

• Ari Folman, who recently directed "Waltz With Bashir," is gearing up to develop the big-screen adaptation of sci-fi author Stanislaw Lem's short story "The Futurological Congress." He plans to combine live-action with animation. (THR)
