Movie Review: “Leap Year”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: January 4, 2010

The players: Director: Anand Tucker, Writers: Deborah Kaplan, Harry Elfont, Cast: Amy Adams, Matthew Goode, Adam Scott, John Lithgow, Noel O'Donovan

Facts of interest: None.

The plot: A woman heads to Dublin to propose to her boyfriend on Leap Day, but when unexpected weather delays her plans, she asks a charming innkeeper to drive her to her final destination.

Our thoughts: Ladies and gentlemen, we have our first sucker of 2010: Anand Tucker’s overly predictable “Leap Year,” a dreadful romantic comedy that’s about as amusing as a soggy piece of toast. I generally enjoy watching both Amy Adams and Matthew Goode on the big screen, but in this train wreck, they sure look out of place.

'Leap Year' trailer shows entire movie

Amy Adams in Leap Year

I'm a huge fan of trailers, but it is quite alarming how many previews these days show us an entire film. Case in point: the new trailer for Anand Tucker's upcoming romantic comedy "Leap Year."

Indeed, this one already reveals all there is to reveal (unless the movie boasts a major twist we don't see here, which i doubt), and on top of that, it doesn't even look that exciting or funny.

In "Leap Year," Amy Adams stars as a young woman who travels to Dublin to propose to her boyfriend (Adam Scott) on leap day, Feb. 29. Tradition says men have to say yes on that day.

'Slumdog' screenwriter Beaufoy to write 'Leap Year'

Golden Globe winner Simon Beaufoy is set to write Spyglass Entertainment's upcoming comedy "Leap Year."

The film stars Amy Adams as a young woman who travels to Dublin to propose to her boyfriend on leap day, Feb. 29. Tradition says men have to say yes on that day.

But when bad weather threatens to ruin her plan, she embarks on a turbulent trip with an Irish innkeeper to pull off her proposal before it’s too late.

Anand Tucker, who most recently helmed "And When Did You Last See Your Father?," is on board to direct. "Made of Honor" screenwriters Harry Elfont and Deb Kaplan wrote an early draft.

Beaufoy recently won a Golden Globe and got nominated for an Oscar for his acclaimed screenplay for "Slumdog Millionaire."

The scribe's other writing credits include "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day" and "The Full Monty," for which he also received an Oscar nomination in 1998.
