Raja Gosnell will direct 'Smurfs' flick

Raja Gosnell is set to direct Sony Pictures' upcoming "Smurfs," a big-screen version of the well-known comics and TV series, according to Variety.

The film will be a blend of CG and live-action, and a release in 3D and 2D is set for Dec. 17, 2010. J. David Stem and David N. Weiss wrote the script, with Audrey Wells doing a light rewrite.

The Smurfs were created by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford (Peyo) in 1958. They are little blue-skinned creatures who live in a small village and are at war with the evil Gargamel.

Gosnell's credits include "Home Alone 3," "Never Been Kissed" and most recently "Beverly Hills Chihuahua." He also directed the two aweful live-action/animated "Scooby-Doo" films.

First trailer for 'The Final Destination' debuts!

Ready to cheat Death one more time? And how about 3D this time? The first trailer for David R. Ellis' upcoming "The Final Destination" has just debuted online, and you can check it out after the jump. Don't expect any changes as far as the plot is concerned. Death will hunt a group of people who survive a tragic accident that was originally meant to kill them (this time they survive a horrible incident at a car race).

Except for the 3D effect maybe, I don't think "The Final Destination" will be all that surprising. Just watch the trailer; it's the same thing for the fourth time already. Then again, many audiences out there love to see people die in the most awkward death traps. Anyway, Krista Allen, Nick Zano, Jenna Craig, Shantel VanSanten, Richard T. Jones and Billy Slaughter star.

'Monsters vs. Aliens' web reviews

DreamWorks Animation returns with "Monsters vs. Aliens," a 3D animated feature about a bunch of monsters trying to save the world from a bunch nasty aliens. Voice cast includes Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie, Aill Arnett, Kiefer Sutherland and Paul Rudd, among others. Let's see what the Web's critics say about this one:

• Ron Henriques at Latino Review: "Though it may mean paying a few extra dollars on your admission ticket, seeking this film out in 3-D is actually worth it and probably the hook that makes it somewhat entertaining and no doubt a box-office success."

FilmSchoolRejects' Cole Abaius: "Overall, 'Monsters vs. Aliens' is a fun film. Simple. It’s flashy enough for the kids and smart enough for parents."

CinemaBlend's Katey Rich: "Funny, insouciant and loaded with charm, Monsters vs. Aliens is the kind of blockbuster spectacle you wish came along every summer."

Joblo's JimmyO: "So what it comes down to is a somewhat missed opportunity as the influences could have been used much better and the story could have been a little less generic."

'Coraline' web reviews

Henry Selick, director of "The Nightmare Before Christmas," returns with "Coraline," a 3D stop-motion adventure about a young girl who enters a parallel world by unlocking a mysterious door in her new home. The voice cast includes Dakota Fanning and Teri Hatcher, and here is what the Web's critics have to say about the film:

CinemaBlend's Josh Tyler: "It’s worth your $10 to plop down in a theater and enjoy the whole 3D experience, it’s just not particularly memorable."

Joblo's JimmyO: "It is not every day that a family film is able to treat the audience as well as this does. Sure it is beautiful to look at and the animation is fantastic, but almost more importantly, it isn’t condescending to the audience."

RopeOfSilicon's Brad Brevet: "When it comes down to it Coraline's visuals are far more impressive than its lackluster story and that just isn't enough for me."

• Matt Goldberg at Collider: "Henry Selick has done a great service to Neil Gaiman's words and crafted a nice little dark fantasy that will toughen up your kids without traumatizing them."

• Georges Roush at LatinoReview: "Coraline is a fantastic piece of work that anyone in this, or the other world, will love."

Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig board 'Tintin' adaptation

Paramount Pictures and Sony Pictures Entertainment today announced Jamie Bell will play Tintin in Steven Spielberg's upcoming 3D motion capture film "The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn," which has officially started production.

Also joining the cast is Daniel Craig, who will portray Red Rackham. Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Gad Elmaleh, Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook are already on board.

Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish wrote the script for this first film, which Spielberg is directing and Peter Jackson is co-producing. Jackson is set to direct the second flick in the upcoming series.

Bell's credits include "Billy Elliot," "King Kong" and "Jumper." He is currently onscreen alongside Craig in "Defiance." The guy's got talent, and I'm sure he'll do just fine portraying the famous young reporter created by Herge.

If you have no clue who popular Tintin really is, here is some extra info from the official press release:

"The Adventures of Tintin - a series of 24 books, the final unfinished adventure was published after Herge's death - became Herge's life's work. The first adventure was published in 1929. Over 200 million copies have been sold worldwide. The popular series has been translated into 70 languages and still attracts thousands of new fans each year."

Yep, I always adored "Tintin," and I'm certainly looking forward to this flick, which is currently scheduled to open in 2011.

Ready for some 'Piranha' action in 3D?

Alexandre Aja is currently working on his next film "Piranha 3-D," a remake of Joe Dante's 1978 film of the same title (but without the 3D).

The writer/director recently talked to the folks at ShockTillYouDrop, and here's what he had to say about the development of the flick:

"I'm finishing storyboards now and using the time to improve the script to get the best action and story gags as possible."

Referring to the concept you can see above, he went on: "That's one of the concepts. There are many because, visually, they'll be different. Like 'Gremlins' not all of the piranha will be the same."

Aja also confirmed he'll start shooting "Piranha 3-D" this year, although a release date has not yet been set.

I can only hope the film will look as awesome as "My Bloody Valentine 3-D." Having different piranha jump at you sounds like fun.

'My Bloody Valentine 3-D' web reviews

How about some blood splatter in 3D? That's exactly what you get in Patrick Lussier's "My Bloody Valentine 3-D," a horror remake about a freak who gets a kick out of killing all kinds of people, etc... Let's check out what some online critics have to say about this 3D event:

Cinematical's William Goss: "Thank goodness for us, then, that it happens to make for cheesy, corny, gimmicky, gory fun -- if only in its 3-D theatrical presentation."

CinemaBlend's Katey Rich: "But despite the few tricks it has up its sleeve and its strict adherence to a genre of horror that's been lampooned for years now, My Bloody Valentine 3D doesn't have nearly enough fun with either its jazzy technology or its inherently campy premise."

• Ron Henriques at LatinoReview: "'My Bloody Valentine 3-D' just might be the most honest film of the year. It tells you just what it is in the title alone: a bloody horror movie presented in 3-D. If you're looking for gore or to be thrilled by the latest digital techniques at the cinema look no further."
