Daily news dose: Nine films competing for foreign Oscar; Summit to adapt 'If I Stay'

Here's your dose of quick news bits for Jan. 14, 2009...

• Here are the nine semifinalists for the best foreign-language Oscar: "Revanche" from Austria; "The Necessities of Life" from Canada; "Entre les murs" (The Class) from France; "Der Baader Meinhof Komplex" from Germany; "Waltz With Bashir" from Israel; "Departures" from Japan; "Tear This Heart Out" from Mexico; "Everlasting Moments" from Sweden; and "3 Monkeys" from Turkey. • Summit Entertainment has aquired the big-screen rights to Gayle Forman's novel "If I Stay." The story focuses on a musician and her boyfriend whose lives change when they get caught up in a tragic train wreck.

• Emmanuelle Chriqui has joined the cast of Géla Babluani’s remake "13." Michael Shannon, Ben Gazzara and Alex Skarsgard also recently jumped on board. The film follows a man who gets a hold of a mysterious package with a set of instructions leading to a fortune. (The Hollywood Reporter)

• Alex Holmes is set to write "The Infiltrator" for 2929 Prods. The film is based on Robert Mazur's upcoming memoir "The Infiltrator: My Secret Life Inside the Dirty Banks Behind Pablo Escobar's Medellin Cartel," which follows a Customs official who had a hand in uncovering a money laundering scheme involving Escobar. Check out Mickey Rourke in '13'

The folks at USA Today got their hands on a still showing Mickey Rourke in Géla Babluani’s "13." A remake of Babluani's own "13 Tzameti,” the film follows a man who gets a hold of a mysterious package with a set of instructions leading to a fortune.

Rourke plays a Texas man broken out of prison. Also starring are 50 Cent, Jason Statham, Ray Winstone, Ray Liotta and Sam Riley. "13" has a tentative release in 2010. Endeavor holds the North American distribution rights.

Winstone, Liotta to join ’13 Tzameti’ remake

Ray Winstone and Ray Liotta are set to star in Géla Babluani’s remake of his 2005 French thriller “13 Tzameti,” according to Variety.

Mickey Rourke, 50 Cent, Jason Statham and Sam Riley are already on board of the project, which the trade says begins production later this month.

Written and directed by Babluani, the film follows a man who gets a hold of a mysterious package with a set of instructions leading to a fortune.

Endeavor holds the North American distribution rights for the remake, which is titled “13.”

Winstone recently appeared in “Fool’s Gold” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” He’s currently filming “Edge of Darkness” for Martin Campbell.

As for Liotta, he was last seen in “Battle in Seattle.” Upcoming projects include “Observe and Report” and “Youth in Revolt.”

Statham, Rourke board ’13 Tzameti’ remake

Mickey Rourke, 50 Cent and Jason Statham are set to star alongside Sam Riley in Géla Babluani’s remake of his own French thriller “13 Tzameti.”

Variety says Babluani also wrote the script for the English version, which follows a man who gets a hold of a mysterious package with a set of instructions leading to a fortune.

Endeavor holds the North American distribution rights for the remake, which is titled “13” and is set to head into principal photography later this year.

Rourke will next be seen in Darren Aronofsky’s acclaimed sports drama “The Wrestler.” 50 Cent was last seen in “Righteous Kill,” and recently wrapped filming for “Streets of Blood.”

As for Statham, his upcoming projects include “Crank 2: High Voltage” and “Transporter 3.” He most recently starred in “Death Race.

“13 Tzameti” snatched the Grand Jury Prize at the 2006 Sundance Festival.
