DVD Review: "Dr. Who Series 6, Part 1"
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: The Doctor returns, alongside newlyweds Amy and Rory, to face monsters and mysteries and adventures across all time and space.
Together they find themselves in Sixties America, battling the invasion the world forgot, then journey on the high seas of 1696 aboard a pirate ship, to solve the mystery of the Siren.
In a bubble universe at the very edge of reality, the Doctor meets an old friend with a new face, and in a monastery on a remote island in the near future, and industrial accident takes on a terrible human shape.
And waiting for them, at the end of all this, is the battle of Demon’s Run, and the Doctor’s darkest hour. Can the truth about River Song save the Time Lord’s soul? Only two things are certain. Silence will fall, and a good man is going to die…
FILM: Time travel, weird contraptions, and police boxes… all a part of the sci-fi cultural phenomenon “Dr. Who." In yet another version of this classic British classic, the good Doctor proves he still has quite a few tricks up his sleeve. With some of the most inventive storylines in recent times, better baddies, and some great sidekicks, this proves to be one of the best Dr. Whos yet!
In the 11th iteration of one of science fiction’s most beloved characters, Dr. Who, Matt Smith delivers a geek-cool quarky time traveler with more than his fair share of wit and wackiness. Along for his adventures as the mysterious River Song is “ER” alum Alex Kingston, who is always a pleasure to watch.
The biggest downside to this show is its apparent lack of budget. It has that shot-on-video gloss to it, and the effects, while adequate, definitely show a lack of funds. Granted, this is a show that relies more on its strong story and characters than effects, but it would have made for a much more enjoyable experience if they would have really had the ability to put these grand ideas on the screen.
VIDEO: BBC America has really delivered a clean, bright and highly detailed picture! Colors are vibrant and the detail here is exquisite!
AUDIO: This disc boasts a fairly laid back 5.1 mix. On the upside, the dialogue and sounds are crisp and clear. On the downside, there is not much for the rear channels to do.
SPECIAL FEATURES: Here is where the BBC America folks come up short: just a single featurette on the monsters in these episodes. Sure, it was a fun watch, but for a show with such a rabid following and rich history, I think there would be much more info to cull for some decent features.
OVERALL: A fine science fiction series from across the pond; I’d say consider checking this one out!
