This week's new movie releases - May 13, 2011

Kristen Wiig in Bridesmaids

The summer season at the movies is supposedly in full swing, but the next two weeks won't see that many huge releases. In fact, only three big films will debut this week and the one after that. On the menu this Friday: Universal's comedy "Bridesmaids" and Sony's 3D action piece "Priest." Let's take a closer look.

BRIDESMAIDS, with Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Rose Byrne

In the flick, Wiig plays Annie, who looks to bluff her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals with an oddball group of bridesmaids. Sound funny? Kind of. I have high hopes for this one because I thoroughly respect Wiig's talents and comic timing, and luckily enough, she's also got a writing credit on the film. Trailers and promos have been promising some decent laughs, and I don't think this one will have trouble finding an audience. My excitement meter: 8/10

PRIEST, with Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Christopher Plummer and Maggie Q

Even though I'm pretty sick of 3D, I must confess "Priest" doesn't look all that bad in terms of visuals. I'm sure the story will fail to impress, but as long as the movie offers some sick stunts, I'm in. Needless to say, I don't have high expectations for this thing. The cast sounds promising, but that's about it. "Priest" is directed by Scott Charles Stewart, dude behind the mediocre action flick "Legion." My excitement meter: 5/10

Also opening in limited release this week are EVERYTHING MUST GO, a comedy with Will Ferrell, and GO FOR IT!, yet another dance movie. My pick with the best chances to score high: the Ferrell flick
