Box Office: 'Pirates of the Caribbean' 4 wins with $90M

Johnny Depp conquers the box office again

Captain Jack and his pirate buddies took over the North American box office this weekend with a decent $90.1 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. The fourth film in the adventure series scored an average of $21,685 per theater at 4,155 locations.

Still, Rob Marshall's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" failed to match the $114 million opening weekend gross of its predecessor "At World's End." The flick did play in less theaters, but then again, ticket prices (especially for 3D showings) are higher these days.

At a distant No. 2, "Bridesmaids" celebrated yet another strong weekend, bagging $21 million from ticket sales at 2,937 sites. The comedy starring Kristen Wiig as a maid of honor trying to control a bunch of crazy bridesmaids lifted its total haul to $59.5 million.

Following in third place this weekend was "Thor," which pulled in $15.5 million for a domestic total of $145.6 million. The action adventure sustained a bigger loss compared to last weekend's earnings (-55.3 percent). "Fast Five" came in fourth with $10.6 million for a cume of $186.2 million.

Meanwhile, "Rio" stayed put in fifth place with earnings of $4.6 million. The animated tale from Fox lifted its total gross to $131.6 million. "Priest" took and even bigger dive, collecting only $4.6 million at No. 6. The Paul Bettany 3D action flick brought its cume to $23.6 million.

At the bottom of the top 10, "Jumping the Broom" picked up $3.7 million in seventh place ($31.3 million total), while "Something Borrowed" bagged $3.4 million for a cumulative gross of $31.4 million at No. 8.

Final two spots: "Water for Elephants" slipped to No. 9 this weekend with $2.1 million for a total of $52.4 million, while "Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family" followed at No. 10 with a weekend gross of $990,000 and a total haul of 51.7 million.
