December Movie Guide: What to see and what to skip

The holiday season at the movies is in full swing, and December is upon us. It is the month that goes out with a bang, delivering some huge blockbusters right before 2011 calls it quits. December won't be the busiest month in terms of releases, but the 21st sure is packed.
As you can see after the jump, not every release is cause for pure excitement, but the line-up looks pretty good this year, with films like "Young Adult," "War Horse," "We Bought a Zoo" and "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" already generating buzz.
Without beating around the bush any longer, please enjoy TSL's December Movie Guide after the jump. The opinions expressed below are those solely of the Screening Log staff. Feel free to share your thoughts and join in on the discussion. Let December begin!

DECEMBER 9
New Year's Eve: Yes, this is Garry Marshall's follow-up to the mediocre "Valentine's Day," and yes, the plot focuses on the lives of several New York people over the course of New Year's Eve. As usual, Marshall has lined up an all-star cast, but I doubt the script will see any improvements over "Valentine's Day." To be honest, could we really expect anything more from this? This one will get its shot to prove itself, but I highly doubt it will be another "Love, Actually." To be safe, just skip it.
The Sitter: This one has a few things going for it: David Gordon Green, who helmed "Pineapple Express" (okay, he also did the crappy "Your Highness") and Jonah Hill, who's getting better and better at what he already does so well. "The Sitter" looks partially funny at least, even though the plot feels very familiar. Still, this will be better thanb "The Pacifier," guaranteed. Give it a shot, see it.
Young Adult (Limited): "Young Adult" is by far THE film I am looking forward to most this December. Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody are back in action, Charlize Theron is playing the lead, and reactions from early screenings of the movie suggest this is a great one, folks. The trailer, by the way, delivers the goods, so what are you waiting for? Make this a priority this month. See it.

DECEMBER 16
Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked: I don't have the time or energy to waste on this. The only thing I can ask is: are they still making shitty movies about these ass clowns? Skip it real good.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows: I mostly enjoyed Guy Ritchie's first "Sherlock Holmes" despite its many problems, so I'm obviously looking forward to see whether this one has some improvements to share with viewers. The film's biggest appeal for me: the story pits Sherlock against Moriarty. Oh yes, and Robert Downey Jr. is awesome too. See it; why not?

DECEMBER 21
The Adventures of Tintin: "Tintin" was a huge part of my childhood, which explains why I am so thrilled about this film. I also believe Steven Spielberg is incapable of making a horrible picture, so I've got my hope us for this thing. It's already been in release in Europe for a while, and I definitely like what I've been hearing. See this one for sure.
The Darkest Hour: Hard to judge this one. The trailer looks interesting enough to get my engaged, but truth be told, this may just as well backfire and crash and burn horribly. I like the concept of an alien race attacking Earth via our power supply, but whether this one will go down as a memorable sci-fi action piece remains to be seen. If you're on the fence too, better skip it and see something else.
War Horse: That something else could definitely be Spielberg's "War Horse," which looks stunning. Sure, this is yet another horse movie, but I will take any day over "Marley & Me." Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson and David Thewlis are leading the cast in what looks like a compelling tale. See it for sure.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol: I am a fan of the whole series, that's true, and I have to admit I am very very excited about this fourth film. The trailer promises just the kind of action we are used to by now, Brad Bird was at the helm of this sequel, and both Tom Cruise and Jeremy Renner are taking the lead... what more do you want? This one may just be the perfect silly fun flick to end the year. See this one too.
We Bought a Zoo: Does this Dec. 21, 2011 look to shape up like one hell of an awesome day for movies, or what? Cameron Crowe returns with "We Bought a Zoo," and reactions from sneak peeks sound very promising. The story of a family re-opening a zoo sounds a little offbeat, but this is just the stuff I like to see from Crowe. See it. I'm sure it won't hurt!
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: David Fincher, people. Need I say more? See this one.
LIMITED RELEASE
Make sure not to miss these limited releases: "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy," "We Need to Talk About Kevin," "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" and "The Iron Lady."
