Movie Review: "The Virginity Hit"

Seen on: September 9, 2010

The players: Directors: Huck Botko, Andrew Gurland, Writers: Huck Botko, Andrew Gurland, Cast: Matt Bennett, Zack Pearlman, Nicole Weaver

Facts of interest: Botko and Gurland also penned "The Last Exorcism."

The plot: Alice heads to Los Angeles, where she encounters some survivors and comes up with a plan to reach a safe haven.

Our thoughts: “The Virginity Hit” is by no means a smart teen comedy, but compared to many others out there, it’s got a certain freshness to it that makes it quite enjoyable to watch. I can’t say this film offered me a memorable experience, but I admit I caught myself spitting out the occasional laugh while watching this amusing video diary of a youngster struggling to loose his virginity.

That last part pretty much sums up the entire movie, but let me be a tad more specific. The lead in this film is a dude named Matt (Matt Bennett), who’s been busy planning a romantic evening of first-time sex with his charming girlfriend Nicole (Nicole Weaver). But just a few days before these two are supposed to hook up, Matt discovers Nicole got pretty freaky with another guy at a frat party.

This is no good news for Matt, who decides to take revenge by having his buddy Zack (Zack Pearlman) film him have sex with Nicole and break up with her right after. That plan doesn’t really end in success either, and as the story progresses, Matt embarks on quite an extravagant mission to finally kiss virginity goodbye. It all sounds pretty stupid, and I would be lying if I told you it wasn’t.

That said, “The Virginity Hit” is both silly and entertaining at the same time. It can essentially pass as a rough mockumentary, and it boasts a certain rawness that sucks you right into the movie and for some weird reason makes you want to stick around and watch until the very end. Honestly, who wouldn’t want to know how on Earth nerdy Matt tries to loose his virginity, right?

Speaking of rawness, the makers behind this comedy purposely didn’t care about cinematography and picture quality, and that’s actually what helps the movie’s global atmosphere considering it all looks like it was shot on a Flip camera. It’s an approach that has gained popularity recently, and it’s ultimately what sets “The Virginity Hit” apart from other flicks in the same genre.

Naturally, the film is raunchy, so you can expect a bunch of vulgar dialogue and sexual references. Not all of the scenes we get to witness here are particularly hilarious or necessary, but all in all, Matt’s journey to get laid isn’t boring. A date with a girl he meets online as well as an encounter with hid favorite porn star all keep the plot moving at a steady pace.

“The Virginity Hit” isn’t equipped with the same depth as a film like “Superbad,” but some similarities are undeniable. This film does prove it has some heart, and I’m sure many folks out there in real life can in one way or another relate to the ways Matt approaches this entire virginity problem. He’s an insecure guy we fins easy to like, and that’s what makes us want to watch him tackle his predicament.

It’s hard to say these kids are all acting in the film, but in a way, they are, and I admit they all come across as pretty natural, even though they occasionally engage in some shenanigans that seem a bit implausible. But hey, this is a teen comedy, so it’s a given. Either way, Matt, Zack and Nicole work together quite well, and so does the rest of the cast.

Freaky quote: "Making love to you would be a memory I could cherish." - Matt Bennett

The final word: Shot like a cheap home video but boasting some funny moments and an entertaining plot, “The Virginity Hit” is surprisingly better than I expected. I don’t think it’s going to take over the box office, but it’s worth checking out. There’s a reason why this raw, cheap YouTube way of filmmaking is here, and “The Virginity Hit” proves you can do something decent without much brain or money.
