Tyler Perry's 'For Colored Girls' to open Nov. 5

Lionsgate decided to move up Tyler Perry's upcoming drama "For Colored Girls" a couple of months. Instead of launching the film early next year (as originally planned), the studio will release it Nov. 2, 2010.

The film is based on Ntozake Shange's 1975 play "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf." The film version focuses on what happens to 20 nameless black women.

"It's a serious film that really lends itself to the fall period," Lionsgate's David Spitz told Variety. Now, "Colored Girls" will face Todd Phillips' comedy "Due Date" and DreamWorks' "Megamind" at the box office.

And yes, releasing the film early means it's up for awards consideration. That said, I don't think the film stands a chance in that race unless Perry decided to stay away from the simplicity of his recent flicks.
