What? 'The Karate Kit' is a big hit?

All signs point to it. The reboot of "The Karate Kid" is on a roll, and early estimates show the 140-minute movie starring Jaden Smith bagged a surprising $19 million at the North American box office Friday!
Yep; I agree I didn't see that one coming. I also didn't expect Joe Carnahan's "The A-Team" to disappoint, but according to Deadline Hollywood, the action flick managed to pull only $9.5 million Friday.
All this means "The Karate Kid" could end up taking $52 million this weekend, with "A-Team" making up to $27 million. It will be a step up from what other recent releases have earned on opening weekend.
Meanwhile, "Shrek Forever After" finished with $4.5 million, reaching a total of $211.5 million. Following in fourth place Friday was "Get Him to the Greek," which picked up $3.2 million ($36.2 million total).
The fifth spot went to Robert Luketic's comedy "Killers," which generated $2.6 million and brought its cumulative gross to $30.2 million. (Source: Deadline Hollywood)

Anyone who says this movie is worth watching is full of beans. Even my nephew hated it. Neither of us have seen the original so we have nothing to compare it to and we still thought it was trash. if this movie sits at anything other then 5 at the box office it will be purely because of an utter lack of competition lol I'll say this much though, some of the people in the theater got a good nap :)
Well maybe you and your nephew and the people in your neighborhood who go to your theater all have bad taste and wouldn't know a good thing if it slapped you upside the head. Karate Kid was really good. I tend to think Jaden Smith is a spoiled little kid who is lucky enough to have big shot parents, but he surprised me in this movie. Even having seen the original means nothing, this film stands on its own. Jackie Chan as always was awesome, good to see him in a role with a little more emotional range. Everyone at the theater I was at, and it was a very large one, loved it. People were actually cheering for the characters during the fight scenes, and everyone clapped at the end (and no not because they were happy it was over). There was a lot of excited buzz about the film. It's also been getting really good reviews from the critics, including Roger Ebert. The scenery of China was very visually dynamic as well- the Forbidden Kingdom, the Dragon Well, and of course the training on the Great Wall. I also saw A-Team as well, which I thought was pretty decent. A lot of action, crazy and loud, but overall entertaining. Some good lines that were pretty funny. Just because you didn't like a movie doesn't mean you have to trash it to other people. Let others make their own decisions and make statements like the only possible way something could do well is if there was no competition. Let's try to be a little more open-minded people.
