Movie Review: 'Saw 3D'

Seen on: October 29, 2010

The players: Director: Kevin Greutert, Writers: Patrick Melton, Marcus Dunstan, Cast: Tobin Bell, Costar Mandylor, Betsy Russell, Dean Armstrong, Gina Holden

Facts of interest: Last film of the series. Or not?

The plot: The traps are alive and the deadly games continue for another round of bloody horror. Jigsaw's spirit is still around too...

Our thoughts: It sure took long enough, but it looks like one of the most profitable horror franchises in the past decade is finally coming to end. “Saw 3D” is supposedly the last installment of the series, and as a result, the filmmakers behind this seventh flick made sure to stuff it with tons of blood and some of the nastiest traps yet.

In terms of storyline though, this sequel is without a doubt a lot thinner than its predecessors. Jigsaw’s right hand is still locking up people he believes deserve some first-class torture, and the cops are still trying to bring the deadly games to a halt. Essentially, it’s more of the same old stuff with an even less elaborate backstory.

Die-hard fans of the franchise can rejoice though, because the traps in “Saw 3D” are definitely among the craziest of the entire series. Lots of Jigsaw victims are literally torn apart, and thanks to the film’s solid 3D effect, the blood splatters straight into our faces. The addition of 3D does indeed make it easier to sit through this thing.

Despite a stupid plot and empty characters, “Saw 3D” boasts quite a fast pace thanks to Kevin Greutert’s direction and Andrew Coutts’ editing, which help move things along without leaving much room for unnecessary breathers. On top of that, a short appearance by Cary Elwes as Dr. Gordon from the first film adds a nice little touch to the final chapter.

Freaky quote: "I wanna play a game." - Tobin Bell

The final word: Frankly, that’s all I got for this one. “Saw 3D” offers more of the same, and the only new thing to experience here is the 3D. Other than that, it’s just another utterly brutal horror sequel that will entertain fans and make a bunch of moola at the box office. Although by no means memorable, it’s also not the worst flick of the series…
