'Avatar' heads into weekend with $380M
James Cameron's hit movie looks for another successful weekend at the box office
James Cameron's sci-fi action spectacle "Avatar" is now the 10th highest grossing film in North America, and the film is heading into this weekend with a domestic gross of $380.5 million after picking up another $6 million Thursday.
Although it faces competition from "Leap Year," "Daybreakers" and "Youth In Revolt," Fox's action flick is en route to top the North American box office for yet another weekend, even though total weekend earnings will certainly slip a bit.
Also still in the race is "Sherlock Holmes," which finished second Thursday with $1.9 million. Guy Ritchie's adventure lifted its cume to $148.5 million. At No. 3, "It's Complicated" picked up another $1.3 million, reaching a total haul of $65.3 million.
Meanwhile, "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" bagged $1 million Thursday, bringing its domestic total to $161.8 million. Following in fifth place was "Up in the Air," which finished with a daily gross of $705,121 ($47.6 million total).
