This week's new movie releases - Jan. 29, 2010

Opening this week are Martin Campbell's action thriller "Edge of Darkness" with Mel Gibson and Ray Winstone, and Mark Steven Johnson's "When in Rome" with Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel.

EDGE OF DARKNESS (by Martin Campbell, with Mel Gibson)

Synopsis: Thomas Craven is a veteran homicide detective for the Boston Police Department and a single father. When his only child, 24-year-old Emma, is murdered on the steps of his home, everyone assumes that he was the target. But he soon suspects otherwise, and embarks on a mission to find out about his daughter's secret life and her killing.

First thoughts: It's been a while since we've last seen Mel Gibson kick ass on the big screen, but now he's back. Does he still have what it takes to lure moviegoers to theaters? Trailers for this one suggest it will be a fast-paced ride, so we'll see. As long as it's thrilling, I'm all for it. Excitement meter: 8/10.

WHEN IN ROME (with Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel)

Synopsis: Disillusioned with romance, an ambitious New Yorker travels to Rome, where she plucks magic coins from a special fountain. The coins attract an assortment of odd suitors, including a sausage merchant, a street magician and an artist. But, when a persistent reporter throws his hat in the ring, she wonders if his love is the real thing.

First thoughts: I don't even want to think about this one. Trailer looks terrible, and the idea isn't that cute either. The cast includes a few folks I believe can be funny at times, but this film just looks dreadful. We'll see what it's all about. My excitement meter for this one: 3/10.
