'Avatar' to beat 'Titanic' overseas next week. How far will it go?
James Cameron's success hit flick "Avatar" is finally closing in on "Titanic." Fox's sci-fi epic finished the weekend overseas with another superb $166.3 million in ticket sales, bringing its international gross to $1.115 billion.
"Titanic" grossed $1.242 billion overseas, and "Avatar" should pass Cameron's previous film next week. Worldwide, the film has now grossed $1.607 billion, just $236 million shy of the $1.843 billion "Titanic" earned.
At a distant No. 2, Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" collected another $26.3 million, bringing its total overseas haul to $168.6 million. Following in third place was "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," which picked up $14.3 million for a total of $158.5 million.
Meanwhile, "It's Complicated" took the No. 4 spot this weekend, bagging $9 million. Nancy Meyers' comedy lifted its cumulative gross to $36.4 million. Clint Eastwood's "Invictus" reached an overseas total of $8.4 million after weekend earnings of $7 million.
Other results from the international circuit: "Did You Hear About the Morgans?" picked up $5.8 million, "Up in the Air" grabbed $5.7 million, and "Tooth Fairy" opened with $5.3 million.
