Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes and director Werner Herzog presented Herzog's new film "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" at the Venice Film Festival earlier this week, and after the jump (and above), you can see some photos from the event.
Below you will also find a new still from the remake. In the film, Cage will play a cop who investigates the murder of a group of illegal immigrants. In the original by Abel Ferrara, Harvey Keitel played a corrupt New York City cop investigating a young nun’s rape.
Here's a bit from The Hollywood Reporter's review of the film:
Filled with unexpected turns and subversive humor, Werner Herzog's "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" is a jazzy, entertaining riff on the theme of a cop who spends too much time in a sewer of criminality and corruption.
And some words from Variety's review from Venice:
Not at all an art film, the picture lacks sufficient action to sate the appetites of sensation seekers, but star Nicolas Cage's name means enough to offer some short-run B.O. traction and good home-viewing market returns.
Screen Daily has this to say about the remake:
But what makes this film truly different is the unique tone introduced by director Werner Herzog – so instead of Ferrara’s hard-edged portrait of self-destruction, here we have absurdist humour, surrealist touches and an almost sweetly optimistic outlook amid the amorality and squalor.
