Sony Pictures Animation's "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" landed at the No. 1 spot at the North American box office Friday with a solid $8.1 million in ticket sales.
The animated adventure directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller is currently playing in both 3D and 2D format at 3,119 locations, and it follows the misadventures of an inventor who creates a device that converts water into food.
At No. 2, Steven Soderbergh's comedy "The Informant!" debuted with a daily gross of $3.6 million. The Warner Bros. release stars Matt Damon as an informant who helps the FBI expose his company's scandal all while hoping he'll be able to move up a few ranks.
Last week's winner "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" slipped to No. 3 with $3.1 million Friday, managing to fend off this weekend's two other wide releases. The Tyler Perry-directed drama has reached a total of $30.9 million.
Brandon Camp's new drama "Love Happens" finished fourth with $3 million. Playing at 1,898 locations, the film stars Aaron Eckhart as a self-help author who falls for a florist (Jennifer Aniston).
Meanwhile, new entry "Jennifer's Body" generated a disappointing $2.8 million from ticket sales at 2,702 locations in fifth place. Scripted by Diablo Cody, the horror comedy follows Megan Fox as a high school chick who eats boys.
