'I Can Do Bad All By Myself' tops Friday box office

I Can Do Bad All By Myself

As expected, Tyler Perry's latest drama "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" jumped to the top of the North American box office Friday with an esimated $8.6 million in ticket sales from 2,255 locations.

The film failed to reach the $14 million opening-day gross of Perry's last film "Madea Goes to Jail," but for a Friday opening leading into what is certainly a quiet weekend at the box office, "Bad All By Myself" did pretty well.

At No. 2, Shane Acker's animated adventure "9" took home $3.3 million. The film opened Wednesday and reached a three-day gross of $7.7 million. The story follows a group of puppet-like “stitchpunk” beings trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

New entry "Sorority Row" finished in third place Friday, collecting $1.9 million from ticket sales at 2,665 locations. The horror thriller from Summit Entertainment centers on a bunch of sorority girls hunted by a killer shortly after one of their pranks goes horribly wrong.

This week's other wide release, "Whiteout," didn't perform well at all, making it only to No. 6 with a daily gross of $1.7 million. The Dominic Sena-directed thriller with Kate Beckinsale is currently playing at 2,745 locations. It follows a U.S. marshal investigating a murder in Antarctica.

Meanwhile, Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" dropped to No. 4, earning $1.9 million for a domestic total of $99.6 million. Following in fifth place with $1.8 million was "All About Steve," which lifted its cume to $17.8 million.
