I'm hungry for 'G.I. Joe' action and have an appetite for 'Julie & Julia'

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Friday is approaching fast, and in anticipation of this weekend's new movie releases, here are some of my final thoughts and feelings about the new flicks before they hit theaters. On the menu this week: "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," "Julie & Julia" and "A Perfect Getaway."

Let me start with "G.I. Joe," which will certainly storm the box office and win the race without a problem. The action flick directed by Stephen Sommers opens at a solid 4,007 locations Friday, making it quite easy for the Paramount release to take the crown.

Although I used to not be excited about "Joe," the recent positive buzz surrounding the film kind of got me interested to find out what this one is all about. Earlier this week, Paramount announced critics would not get to see the flick, a move that usually involves films that suck.

However, many folks who have seen the film already gave it a solid rating. Then again, the film's rating on Rotten Tomatoes took a dive recently and is now down to 55% on the Tomatometer. Anyway, let's hope this one will deliver enough entertaining action.

The other film I am looking forward to is Nora Ephron's "Julie & Julia," a film that really scored a big marketing campaign. Maybe I was watching the wrong channels recently, but I've seen way more commercials for the Meryl Streep/Amy Adams food flick than for "G.I. Joe."

While I'm not a skilled cook and don't quite share a passion for cooking, I look forward to the film's main performances. Streep's been doing some marvelous work, and I'm sure she'll inject this flick with all the energy the recipe for an amusing comedy calls for. "Julie & Julia" opens at 2,975 locations, and may perform well enough.

Then there's the thriller I believe will not necessarily score a top spot at the box office: "A Perfect Getaway," which debuts at 2,159 theaters. I haven't seen it yet, but first reviews I've read are somewhat mixed. To me, this one just sounds like something I've seen before and simpy can't get very excited about.

That's what this weekend has to offer in wide releases, and that's how I feel about them. What are your picks? See you at the movies!
