This week's new movie releases - Sept. 4, 2009

Opening this week are Phil Traill's "All About Steve" with Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper; Mike Judge's "Extract" with Jason Bateman and Mila Kunis; and "Gamer" with Gerard Butler and Michael C. Hall:

ALL ABOUT STEVE (with Sandra Bullock, Bradley Cooper)

Synopsis: Despite the fact that she has only gone on one short date with the man (Cooper), a love-struck puzzle creator (Bullock) becomes enamored with a successful cameraman and follows him to a series of media events in hopes that the feeling is mutual.

First thoughts: Sandra Bullock is back for another round of comedy, but I doubt this one will be as charming as "The Proposal." It certainly boasts a great cast, but trailer for "Steve" failed to impress me. Especially Bullock's character looks a tad too goofy and annoying for my taste, but we'll see what she's all about when the film opens this Friday. On my excitement meter, this one gets 6/10.

EXTRACT (with Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, Ben Affleck)

Synopsis: A flower extract plant owner (Bateman) deals with workplace issues and a stream of bad luck, including his wife's affair with a gigolo.

First thoughts: I've seen Mike Judge's "Extract" and really enjoyed it. It won't make the selection of best comedies of the year, but it's a refreshing look at a character who's overloaded with personal and work-related trouble. Ben Affleck co-stars in a side role, and he's just hilarious to listen to. You should definitely check this one out.

GAMER (with Gerard Butler, Michael C. Hall, Ludacris)

Synopsis: Humans control other humans in a mass-scale, multiplayer online game. Reclusive billionaire Ken Castle has created the controversial form of entertainment, "Slayers," a hugely popular game that allows millions to act out their innermost desires and fantasies in front of a global audience. At the center is Kable, the superstar and cult hero of "Slayers," the savage, ultra-violent first person shooter game. Kable is controlled by Simon, a young gamer with rock star status who continues to defy all odds by guiding Kable to victory each week.

First thoughts: This is the next action flick form the creators of the "Crank" flicks, and that means brainless action scenes with plenty of crazy violence and tons of explosions and stuff. I'm sure the whole story behind "Gamer" won't matter for a second. "Crank" and its sequel really entertained me, so I'm kind of looking forward to this senseless big-screen experience. This one gets a 7/10 on my excitement meter.
