What to expect at the movies in August '09

August of 2009 has arrived, and it will be quite the busy movie month. July was not a bad month, and although some films really disappointed me, others definitely kept me entertained. But hey, that's a thing of the past now. Let's look at what this year's August has in store for us hungry moviegoers:
The first weekend of the month is certainly action-packed, as Stephen Sommers' "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" rolls onto the big screen. I've heared it's silly but wildly amusing, and hey, sometimes, that's exactly what I'm looking for in a summer flick. Plus, it's got Sienna Miller kicking butt and wearing ridiculously tight costumes, so, what more could you want?
Also opening on the 7th is "Julie & Julia," a comedy with the great Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, who already proved they've got what it takes to star in a film together. For those prefering something more intense than a bunch of cooking/life lessons, this weekend's also got "A Perfect Getaway" lined up, a thriller with Milla Jovovich. Does that one get me excited? Not so much.
But let's move on to the weekend of the 14th. With four major releases, it will be a busy one for sure, and it looks like it's got someting for every moviegoer. The film I am most excited about here is "District 9," the sci-fi thriller about aliens living slum-like conditions on Earth. It looks incredibly intriguing and action-packed as well, and it already has me hooked.
Fans of romances will certainly go and check out "The Time Traveler's Wife," based on the novel with the same title. My girlfriend is reading it right now and she likes it, but I hope Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams will do more than they hint at in the trailer: hugging and kissing. Fans of films about young rock bands and stuff will be able to check out "Bandslam" with Vanessa Hudgens, and for those who enjoy the raunchy stuff, "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard" will certainly deliver some laughs.
It's hard to believe, but the weekend of August 21 will mark the second-to-last of the month. Quentin Tarantino returns to the big screen with "Inglourious Basterds," a film that has been getting mixed reviews. I always enjoy an entertaining Tarantino flick, and I admit I am intrigued to find out what this one is all about. Killing many Nazis, I guess.
Two other films open that weekend: "Post Grad" with Alexis Bledel (looks like a decent teen romance story), and "Shorts," the latest from "Spy Kids" creator Robert Rodriguez. I gotta say, that last one does look a little silly. But maybe it's incredibly entertaining? I can only hope so.
Three films will wrap up August. First up, "The Final Destination" will head our way in 3D, and although I've pretty much hated the past sequels, I admit I am excited about the 3D thing. I'm sure it will be ridiculously bloody. Rob Zombie will also present "Halloween 2," a sequel I am not looking forward to at all. Something about the first one just didn't click with me. Lastly, Ang Lee returns with "Taking Woodstock," a film I have seen and can only recommend.
So that's it for the preview. The films I am really looking forward to are "District 9" and "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard." By the way, a bunch of smaller films will also make their way to theaters, and among those I am highly interested to see are "Paper Heart," "My One and Only" and "Cold Souls."
