'Final Destination' beats 'Halloween II' Friday

"The Final Destination," the fourth installment in the popular horror series, took the top spot at the North American box office Friday with an estimated $10.9 million in ticket sales.
The David R. Ellis-directed sequel, which opened in 3D and standard format at 3,121 locations this weekend, delivered a better Friday start than the $7.1 million daily gross generated by its predecessor "Final Destination 3" in 2006.
Debuting in second place Friday was Rob Zombie's sequel "Halloween II," which grabbed $7.6 million from ticket sales at 3,025 locations. The film just failed to beat the $10.8 million opening day gross of its predecessor in 2007.
This weekend's third wide release, "Taking Woodstock," finished in ninth place with only $1.2 million. The Ang Lee-directed film about the creation of the Woodstock Festival is currenty playing at 1,393 locations.
Last week's winner "Inglourious Basters" dropped to third place, bagging $5.9 million for a domestic total of $59.6 million. Following at No. 4 with $3 million was "District 9," which brought its total gross to $83.1 million.
Fifth on Friday was Stephen Sommers' action blockbuster "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," which reached $126.7 million after a daily take of $2.3 million.
