Daily news dose: Malcolm Spellman to write 'Soul Train;' Jason Winer set to direct 'Shining City'

Here is your dose of film news from the trades and Web for Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009:
• Malcolm Spellman is set to write a big-screen adaptation of the classcic television show "Soul Train" for Warner Bros. The show ran from 1971 - 2006, and host Don Cornelius is on board to produce the project. Variety says the film version will be set in the '80s. The story follows a guy with a talent for "popping," a specific street dance.
• Jason Winer is in talks to direct "Shining City," Warner's adaptation of Seth Greenland's novel. The film follows a dad who inherits a dry cleaning business and discovers it's only a front for prostitution ring. He decides to run it, until one of his enemies thretens to take him down. Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel are writing the script. (The Hollywood Reporter)
• Michael Caleo ("The Sopranos") will write EuropaCorp's "Volcano," a crime drama focusing on Norman's Cay, a small Bahamian island known for cocaine smuggling involving Pablo Escobar's right-hand man Carlos Lehder. Luc Besson will produce the film. Caleo's credits include "Normandy" and "Gang Leader for a Day." (Variety)
• "The Grudge" director Takashi Shimizu is turning his next film, "The Shock Labyrinth," into a 3D experience, this according to the Hollywood Reporter. Set in a theme park, the film follows a group of friends stuggling with the shock return of a presumably dead friend.
• Former Beatles manager Brian Epstein will get his own biopic, now that producer David Permut has acquired Tony Gittelson's script "A Life in the Day," according to Variety. Epstein managed the group from 1961 - 1967. The film will offer a detailed look at the formation of the band.
