Here's your dose of film news for August 3, 2009:
• Will Ferrell was attached to star in and David Dobkin ("Fred Claus") was set to direct 20th Century Fox's comedy "Neighborhood Watch," but both exited the project, according to Variety. The film follows a city guy who moves to suburbia, joins the neighborhood watch, and quickly uncovers a major conspiracy.
• This is just a rumor at this point, but according to TVNZ, Katie Holmes has been approached to star in "Sex and the City 2." Apparently, Holmes would play big-time company executive who will clash with Kim Cattrall's Samantha Jones. I'll believe it when I see her on the screen.
• Earlier this year we found out Fox is prepping "Hitman 2," and according to ComingSoon, Timothy Olyphant said he may return as Agent 47 if the studio wanted him back. "If they want me to do another one, I supposed they could have me, yes," he said.
• Troy Nixey will direct "Simple Machines," a family fantasy about a young inventor who heads out to protect his latest creation before it falls in the hands of a ruthless industrialist with evil intentions. Nixey's currently shooting "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark." (Variety)
• A sequel to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" will be heading our way, but will it be without Liev Schreiber as Victor Creed. According to CinemaBlend, maybe not. Said Schreiber, "I'm over 40 now, and do I really want to go through the physical stuff that it took to pull that off again? I'm not so sure."
• Will Yun Lee is set to star in "Oka! Amerikee" and "Hollywood Untitled." "Oka!" is directed by Lavinia Currier and follows Louis Sarno, ethno-musicologist living among the Bayaka Pygmies in Central Africa. "United" is directed by Mun Chee Yong and stars Lee as a man struggling with life after waking up from a coma. (The Hollywood Reporter)
