Box Office: 'Transformers,' 'Ice Age' tie for No. 1!

Weekend of July 3 – 5, 2009

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” and “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” tied for the No. 1 spot at the North American box office this weekend with $42.5 million each, according to studio estimates Sunday.

While Michael Bay’s sequel lifted its domestic total to an impressive $293.4 million after only a little more than a week in release, the third installment in the “Ice Age” series brought its total to $67.5 million.

Playing at 4,099 locations, “Dinosaurs” scored an average of $10,360 per theater, while “Fallen” pulled $10,038 per theater at a total of 4,234 locations. This would put the “Transformers” follow-up slightly behind the animated adventure tale.

Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies,” this week’s second major release,” debuted in third place with $26.1 million. Starring Johnny Depp as American bank robber John Dillinger, the film reached a cumulative gross of $41 million.

Meanwhile, “The Proposal” picked up another $12.7 million for a total haul of $94.2 million at No. 4 after a strong three-week run. Following in fifth place with a weekend gross of $10.4 million was “The Hangover,” which brought its cume to $204.1 million.

Pixar’s “Up” slipped to No. 6 with $6.5 million, bringing its total gross to $264.8 million after six weeks in release. At No. 7, Nick Cassavetes’ tearjerker “My Sister’s Keeper” took home $5.2 million for a domestic gross of $25.9 million.

Tony Scott’s action remake “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” finished eighth place this weekend, earning $2.5 million for a total of $58.4 million after a mediocre four-week run.

At the bottom of the top 10, “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” tied with “Year One,” with each pulling in $2.1 million. “Museum” reached a total of $167.7 million, while “One” brought its cumulative gross to $38 million.
