'Avatar' trailer, new footage to debut on 'Avatar' day

No, this is no joke. James Cameron and 20th Century Fox will launch the trailer for Cameron's "Avatar" and new footage from the film on Aug. 21, 2009, a date they adequately named "Avatar Day."

The worldwide trailer launch will be presented in all formats, and it will also debut online. Select cinemas and IMAX theaters will screen extended footage from the 3D project.

Details on locations and reserving tickets for this event have not yet been announced, but the footage will only be shown in 3D. We'll keep you posted.

I'm certainly a fan of teasers and trailers, but I'm not sure if I actually want to see a bunch of footage from such a big flick before its actual release. I'll be looking for the trailer for sure, but I'll definitely pass on the rest.

Anyway, "Avatar" takes cinemagoers to a spectacular new world beyond their imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption, discovery and unexpected love, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization.

The film will hit theaters Dec. 18, 2009.
