Here's what you need to know in terms of the latest film news on July 30, 2009:
• Matthew McConaughey and Eva Mendes may star in Jonathan Jakubowicz's upcoming indie flick "Southbound." Peter Craig wrote the script, about a border patrol officer who risks his life and career by accepting a bribe from a gorgeous Mexican woman. (Variety)
• Jeremy Renner ("The Hurt Locker") is attached to join Ben Affleck's "The Town," the big-screen adaptation of Chuck Hogan's novel "The Prince of Thieves." Jon Hamm and Rebecca Hall also star in the film, about a thief who falls in love with the manager (Hall) of the bank he recently robbed. (THR)
• Joseph Kosinski, the director of "Tron Legacy," will direct "Oblivion," an action flick based on his own concept. The story follows an injured solider sent to a damaged planet to destroy the remains of a primitive alien race. Things change when he runs into a mysterious stranger. (THR)
• Steven Spielberg may consider directing a film about Matt Helm, a government agent who appeared in 27 novels by Donald Hamilton. Paul Attanasio recently delivered a rewrite of the script, and it looks like Spielberg will end up producing the film. (Variety)
• Jay Russell, who directed "Ladder 49," is in talks to helm "Duncan," a comedy written by Barton Randall. I know this sounds a tad awkward, but the film follows a grown woman who reconnects with a stuffed animal from her childhood. Freaky indeed, right? (THR)
• Just the other day, we reported about Rachelle Lefevre not being able to reprise her role as Victoria in "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse." Summit said it was because of scheduling conflicts, but according to the actress, that's not the case. Head over here to read what both camps have to say about this situation.
• Finally, check out this French poster for David R. Ellis' sequel "The Final Destination," which will be heading your way in 3D Aug. 28. 2009. (via Worst Previews)

Well, it now looks like Spielberg will only produce the film.
