Saturday film news web roundup: Look at 'Fantastic Mr. Fox,' More pics from Barrymore's 'Whip It!'

Whip It!

Welcome to our Saturday film news roundup, a brief entry with short descriptions and links to film news we either missed or quite honestly didn't have time to add. Here's what you need to know on July 11, 2009:

• Earlier this week, we posted a first pic from Drew Barrymore's upcoming flick "Whip It!," starring Ellen Page as a Texas teenager who finds a way of dealing with her misery after she discovers a roller derby league in Austin. Click here and see more images from the film, which opens Oct. 9, 2009.

• The folks at Joblo posted a small first image from Wes Anderson's upcoming stop-motion flick "Fantastic Mr. Fox," featuring the voices of George Clooney Meryl Streep, Bill Murray and Owen Wilson. Check out that first still right here.

• Are you excited about this year's Comic Con? If so, make sure to check out the official schedule for the four-day event in San Diego, Calif. Check out the Thursday schedule here, and that for Friday right here. Sadly, we won't be able to attend this year, but we'll shoot for next.

• Rosamund Pike, Minnie Driver and Rachelle Lefevre are joining Paul Giamatti in Richard J. Lewis' indie drama "Barney's Version," based on Mordecai Richler's final novel that focuses on a character who's been through three marriages, has had two children, and may have been somehow involved in the disappearance of one of his buddies. (The Hollywood Reporter)

• We've heard quite a bunch about "Ghostbusters III" recently, and in a new interview with MakingOf, Harold Ramis had quite a lot to say about the third installment. He says characters come first. He also talks special effects, script and some other cool things.

• BBC Films has acquired the rights to Chris Cleave's novel "Little Bee," with Nicole Kidman attached to star in and produce the project. Shawn Slovo is set to write the script, which follows a 16-year-old Nigerian orphan who encounters a British couple out of their safety zone on an African beach. (Variety)

• For a release schedule of Mark Webb's acclaimed film "(500) Days of Summer," click here. It will be coming to a city near you, I promise. The flick stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel and follows two strangers who struggle with a rather complex relationship.
