This week's new movie releases - June 12, 2009

This week, we're only looking at two wide releases: Tony Scott's remake "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" with Denzel Washington and John Travolta; and Karey Kirkpatrick's family film "Imagine That" with Eddie Murphy:

THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3

Synopsis: Denzel Washington stars as New York City subway dispatcher Walter Garber, whose ordinary day is thrown into chaos by an audacious crime: the hijacking of a subway train. John Travolta stars as Ryder, the criminal mastermind who, as leader of a highly-armed gang of four, threatens to execute the train's passengers unless a large ransom is paid within one hour.

First thoughts: If you've seen Tony Scott's previous flicks, it's pretty easy to figure out what to expect in this thriller: a rather shallow story line, great visuals, decent action and probably some decent performances as well? Judging solely by the trailer, "Pelham" looks pretty entertaining...

IMAGINE THAT

Synopsis: Eddie Murphy stars as a successful financial executive who has more time for his blackberry than his seven-year-old daughter (Yara Shahidi). When he has a crisis of confidence and his career starts going down the drain, however, he finds the solution to all his problems in his daughter's imaginary world.

First thoughts: Eddie Murphy desperately needs a hit, but I'm not quite sure this one will do. Okay, the film looks all cute, but on the other hand, the trailer failed to impress me. I can only hope the plot will be more surprising and varied than what we get to see in the preview.
